SHIELD, THE: "ON THE JONES" {SIXTH SEASON PREMIERE} (TV)

Summary

One in this series about tough guy detective Vic Mackey, his family, and his coworkers.

Vic is still determined to find Lemansky’s killer, but his team does not seem to be capable of producing meaningful leads. He becomes convinced that Guardo is responsible and vows to kill him in order to avenge Lemansky’s death. He, Ronnie, and Shane visit Lemansky’s grave and shoot their guns into it as a sort of ersatz salute. Several Salvadorans confess to Lemansky’s murder and turn themselves in to the station, all of them extremely unlikely to have actually committed the deed. Corrine arrives at the station looking for Vic, but Dutch tells her that he is not expected back until the next day. She is worried that he has not responded to her calls of late but Dutch assures her that everything is fine. Kavanaugh speaks to Phillips about the investigation into Lemansky’s murder. He tries to convince Phillips that Vic may be ultimately responsible for Lemansky’s death, positing his own theory about the events surrounding the planted heroin, the deal with Antoine Mitchell, and Lemansky’s eventual status as fugitive from justice. Phillips reluctantly gives Kavanaugh the opportunity to secretly investigate Vic.

Claudette assigns Vic to look into an arson committed on a drug rehabilitation center in a gang neighborhood; he agrees despite his continuing obsession with finding Lemansky’s killer. Vic and the squad track down Moses, one of Antoine’s drug runners, and violently interrogate him about the arson, accusing him and his gang of being the perpetrators. However, Vic discovers that Moses has been supplying longtime clinic patients with drugs, and that one of them might have become delusional from attempting to rehabilitate and may have set the fire. They find a lead on a possible suspect, infiltrating his apartment and discovering that he has apparently bludgeoned his roommate to death and left his body in the bathroom. Kavanaugh arrives at the station claiming that he is beginning an investigation into Lemansky’s death. Dutch, however, is confused when Kavanaugh indicates that he considers Vic a suspect in the murder. However, Kavanaugh manages to convince Dutch that Vic may have been responsible.

Vic, Shane, and Robbie find a newspaper article claiming that Lemansky was a dirty cop. They are outraged by this and confront Claudette about it. Claudette says there is nothing she can do about it, although they believe that Kavanaugh was the one who forced Lemansky into a compromising position, thus leading to the actions he took before his death including a second deal with Antoine. However, Claudette says that Lemansky never sold out any corrupt cops and that there was only one deal with Antoine, much to Shane’s shock. They realize that Kavanaugh manipulated events to make it seem as though Lemansky turned against him. Vic spots Kavanaugh in the office and asks Dutch about it. Dutch admits that Kavanaugh is specifically looking in to the possibility that Vic killed Lemansky. Shane retreats to his car and contemplates committing suicide by shooting himself, but he is interrupted by the arrival of Danny and her baby. Vic confronts Kavanaugh in front of the whole office, and they argue about their misdeeds and culpability. They nearly get into a physical fight but are restrained by everyone else in the office. Phillips calls Kavanaugh into his office and upbraids him for the lack of discretion in his investigation. Phillips decides that he has had enough of Kavanaugh and takes him off of the investigation, asking him to leave the building. However, Kavanaugh gets them to listen when he claims that he has proof that Vic had Lemansky killed; he claims that Emolia is the one who set up Lemansky’s murder on behalf of the Salvadorans. Claudette and Phillips are both highly skeptical of this evidence and the timing of its introduction. Phillips decides to bring Emolia in to get her testimony about the situation, and Claudette notes that Dutch is already working on determining where she is.

Kavanaugh visits Emolia, who has sent Sebastian to go live with her mother where he is “safe.” She fears for her own life after her informing on Guardo. She no longer trusts Vic or his squad, and listens to Kavanaugh when he claims he can “make things right.” Vic confronts Aceveda, accusing him of working with Kavanaugh to get him to believe that Lemansky informed on him. Aceveda claims that Kavanaugh manipulated and deceived him as well. They get into an argument about the matter and Vic is incensed that Aceveda seemingly got Lemansky off the force by killing him, and that his memory is being disgraced. Aceveda says there is nothing he can do about it, being merely “the face of the decision.” Kavanaugh coaches Emolia to tell the police that Vic used her as the middleman to plan Lemansky’s murder, and that Vic threatened her son if she didn’t comply. She agrees in exchange for payments from Kavanaugh to help her get a new home for herself and Sebastian. Dutch arrives in order to question her, and Kavanaugh manages to call him and misdirect him so that he does not go in.

Meanwhile, Julien and Tina investigate a robbery and attempted homicide taking place at a pornographic video rental shop. Claudette tells Vic that she is not particularly concerned about Kavanaugh, and notes that he has not yet submitted his pension paperwork for early retirement; Vic is clearly stalling so that he can find out who killed Lemansky. Claudette gives him an order from the chief of police ordering his immediate early retirement, ahead of the previously scheduled time; she calls it a “lifeline” and urges him to sign it. However, he claims that without him the department would fall apart, and leaves to deal with a hostage situation at a methadone clinic. He and the squad work to evacuate civilians and secure the place, but Shane is clearly distracted and Vic believes that he may not be fit to carry out their mission. Corrine visits Danny and asks where Vic is; she says she has barely seen him since Lemansky’s memorial. Corrine admits that she considered that Vic might have been staying with Danny, and they get into an argument about her relationship with Vic and the possibility that Vic is her baby’s father. Corrine warns her that two of her children with Vic are autistic and that if he is the father there could be a genetic predisposition of which she should be aware.

During the hostage situation, Shane breaks formation out of worry that an infant hostage will be harmed. He attempts to negotiate with the criminal to release the baby in exchange for himself as a hostage. As a show of faith, Shane douses himself with gasoline, much to Vic’s surprise. He convinces the man to place the baby in a nearby closet, putting him out of the reach of the gasoline fumes and calming him down. Vic bursts in through a skylight to ambush the man and gets shot and wounded, but Shane manages to wrestle him to the ground, thus freeing the hostages. Kavanaugh arrives at the station with Emolia, who gives her testimony as per Kavanaugh’s instructions. Vic recovers from his gunshot wound with Corrine’s begrudging assistance, and Shane comes to visit him. Vic calls Shane out for his seemingly suicidal tactics during the hostage situation. However, he believes that Shane is acting out of grief over Lemansky’s death. He also tells Shane about Claudette’s attempts to get him to acquiesce to early retirement, saying that he needs Shane’s help to find Lemansky’s killer before that happens.

Claudette begins to believe Kavanaugh’s story, but Dutch points out the unlikelihood of Vic killing Lemansky, and the suspicious behavior exhibited by Kavanaugh. She asks Dutch to bring in Vic to question him about Guardo and Emolia. Dutch talks to Vic about this and they return to the Barn together. Kavanaugh proposes to Phillips that he continue the investigation, believing that Dutch is too loyal to Vic to be fully trusted. Phillips gives his approval. Meanwhile, Dutch requests roadside security footage from Claudette in order to confirm Kavanaugh’s claim about where he met with Emolia. Tina and Julien discover a lead on the porn shop case, and discover that the owner of the store produced and appeared in a particular pornographic film; every DVD copy of the film in local shops was bought up by the suspect. The shop owner cannot immediately recall the name of the actress who appeared with him in the porn film. Claudette confides in Dutch that the Barn may get shut down if she doesn’t turn the police force around in the next few months. They and Julien track down the woman from the film and her grandson, whom they apprehend when he attempts to escape. The grandmother admits that she appeared in the porn film in order to raise enough money to post bail for her grandson after he was arrested for stealing a car.

Vic visits Kavanaugh and threatens him to back off of the case. Kavanaugh reveals that there is already a unit waiting at Vic’s house to arrest him for questioning related to Lemansky’s death. Dutch, Tina, and Julien investigate a house where numerous people have been violently and bloodily murdered. Vic goes to see Corrine and tells her about Kavanaugh’s scheme. He notices Aceveda giving a press conference on the news and watches as Aceveda talks about Lemansky’s death, highlighting his apparent corruption. Kavanaugh roots through Vic’s possessions looking for evidence to use against him. As he leaves he muses to himself that his investigation is “nothing personal” against Vic. Commercials deleted.
