LOVE THY NEIGHBOR {A.K.A. TYLER PERRY'S LOVE THY NEIGHBOR}: LINDA TO THE RESCUE (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy series about a diner owner and her family.

Hattie encourages Linda to flirt with the customers, but her attempts at doing so quickly backfire. Linda went on a date the previous night but did not enjoy herself, and has become frustrated with dating in general. Danny and Drew try to get Scott to cooperate with them on their latest work project, afraid of the upcoming deadline. Scott, however, does not take it particularly seriously. Suddenly a horde of teenagers run into the diner chasing after a lone girl. Linda defends the girl and demands to know what is happening, but none of them will explain it. The teenagers threaten to harm the girl until Hattie physically throws their leader out, causing the rest to follow suit. The teenagers remain outside of the diner and Linda suggests that they call the police. The lone girl, Caroline, explains that she is constantly bullied by them, and she sits down with Linda, who seems particularly concerned about her. Drew notices that Caroline is bleeding and Hattie offers to get a first aid kit for her, but Caroline insists that she is fine and plans to sneak out the back door. She meekly admits that the bleeding is menstrual blood; she is thirteen years old and states that this is her first period, and says that it is related to the reason why she is being bullied. Linda, sensitive to her plight, asks Danny, Floyd, and Sam to leave while Hattie and Drew take the girl into the bathroom to get her cleaned up.

They get Caroline cleaned up and give her a change of clothes while they clean her regular outfit. Caroline explains that her mother died several years ago and never explained to her what to do during her first period; she is being cared for by her single father, whom she says is doing his best but “worries a lot.” She decided not to tell him about being bullied, believing that he would be too busy to help her. Caroline goes to tend to her little brother at home; Linda offers her a ride despite her unease at getting a ride from a stranger. She, Hattie, and Drew introduce themselves and promise her that they will keep her safe. Linda insists that she needs to speak to her father about the matter but she asks her not to do so; she feels that he is undergoing a great deal of stress from a combination of financial troubles and loneliness following the death of her mother. Linda brings Caroline home and meets her little brother P.J. Linda gives Caroline her number and is present when her father comes home; it turns out that he is Philip, a regular customer at the diner and the one on the receiving end of her botched flirtation attempt earlier that day.

Linda tries to get Caroline to tell her father about what happened that day, but she is too scared. Caroline tries to convince Linda to leave even though Philip invites her to stay for dinner. Linda manages to persuade Caroline to tell Philip about her first period, and he is quite uncomfortable at the news. Linda assures her that this is a natural reaction and Philip proves to be more understanding after his initial shock wears off. He thanks Linda for her help and is simply relieved that Caroline is okay. He speaks to Linda in private, who tells him that Caroline is being bullied at school. He is frustrated; he just placed her in a different school, claiming she was bullied there as well for her intelligence. He explains that he was in the army but left in order to return and care for his children after the death of his wife. He feels that he is “getting to know them” for the first time and is not always certain of how to take care of them while simultaneously working multiple jobs. Linda offers to stay and help him with dinner, and he seems quite appreciative towards her. Later, Philip speaks to Caroline in private and tells her that he loves her and that she can always confide in him if she has any sort of problem. She agrees, and he promises to help her deal with the bullies at her school. Commercials deleted.
