FRESH OFF THE BOAT: PILOT {SERIES PREMIERE} (TV)
Summary
The first in this comedy series, inspired by the memoir by chef Eddie Huang, about a Taiwanese immigrant family and their attempts to build a "perfect" American life in 1990s Florida.
In this episode, young wannabe-gangsta Eddie is frustrated when his immigrant parents, Louis and Jessica Huang, whisk the family from multicultural Washington, D.C. to Orlando, Florida, where Louis has opened an "all-American" Wild West-themed steakhouse. Once there, Jessica encounters a group of nosy white suburban moms as Louis finds that Cattleman's Ranch is not exactly drawing crowds. Jessica sends her sons off to their new schools with instructions not to "make waves." Eddie wins over his classmates with his love of hip-hop but then finds himself ostracized because of his traditional Chinese lunch food. Little brothers Emery and Evan have no trouble fitting in. Jessica tries to bond with the local moms as Louis gets the idea to hire a Caucasian host for the restaurant to appease potential customers. He quickly hires the eccentric Mitch.
Eddie begs his parents to buy him "white-people lunch," namely the popular boxed meal Lunchables. Louis tries to turn his business around by shooting a local commercial, though Jessica begins to lose patience with her new life in Florida. Eddie gets into a fight when another student uses a racist term toward him; Louis and Jessica are upset when the school fails to defend Eddie against the insult. Despite their setbacks, Louis remains confident that Orlando holds new opportunities for the family, explaining that he wants their lives to be "more than okay," as they were in D.C. Eddie then resolves to "create his own place" in his new life and school. Includes commercials and promos.
