CRISTELA: LATINO 101 (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy series about a young Mexican-American woman working as an intern at a law firm.
Cristela works to assist Trent on a case representing a slum lord who refuses to rent out to minorities, hoping to be permitted to sit alongside him during the trial. She and Josh become intensely competitive with each other over the case, requiring the intervention of Ben Buckner, one of the firm’s associates. He warns them that their rivalry could ruin their friendship, and Cristela takes his warning seriously. Trent selects Cristela to accompany him, delighting her. Meanwhile, Alberto and Natalia start spending a great deal of time together, mystifying Daniela and Felix. Daniela comes to believe that he is trying to befriend Natalia in an attempt to get closer to Cristela. Cristela tells Daniela and Felix about her appointment in the case, but Felix believes she was only selected because she is a minority in order to make the client look less racist. Cristela insists otherwise, but Daniela and Felix tell her to be happy that she has gotten ahead regardless of the reason why, advising her to take every advantage she can get.
Concerned, Cristela confronts Trent about this matter and he freely admits that he selected her because she is a minority. She comes to doubt the efficacy of her own efforts but ultimately decides to go through with it, albeit reluctantly. She tells Josh about this; he is happy that she won, although he notes that it was his idea to have a minority at the counsel table for the case. In trial, Trent attempts to establish that his client does not discriminate against people based on their ethnicity or skin color. He incorporates Cristela’s presence into his arguments, much to her embarrassment. She points out that he has further harmed his case by referring to a pair of Latino jurors as Mexican when they are actually Cuban, demonstrating his ignorance. Daniela questions Alberto as to why he is spending time with Natalia, but he simply replies that he enjoys doing so. He also refutes Daniela’s accusation that he is only befriending Natalia to endear himself to Cristela. When pressed, he reveals that it has been nearly ten years since his mother passed away; he was in high school at the time and started descending into delinquency until Natalia stepped in, preventing him from getting arrested and providing him with support to help him work through his grief. They have both been lighting votive candles for his mother at the church lately, and Alberto insists that Natalia is “gentle and caring” despite her abrasive personality.
Trent returns from trial and blames Cristela for his shortcomings, deciding not to bring her back the next day. He believes that the jurors disliked her despite her attempt to persuade him otherwise. Trent offers to have Josh replace her, but he declines, unwilling to aid in punishing Cristela; she is appreciative of his moral stance. Cristela vows to aid Trent in representing the “racist with a heart of gold” client, and left with no other option he decides to bring her back. She convinces him to allow her to help correct his mistakes. However, their efforts in the courtroom do not yield much success. Daniela tells Natalia that she appreciates what she did for Alberto, although Natalia rebuffs her. Includes commercials.
