SCANDAL: HONOR THY FATHER (TV)

Summary

One in this drama/political thriller about the Pope & Associates crisis management firm in Washington D.C.

David presents Jake with an immunity agreement preventing the government from prosecuting him if he testifies against Command. Jake refuses to sign it, believing that it would place him, Quinn, and Huck in danger. He threatens David, warning him to drop the case or suffer dire consequences. Charlie, Huck, and Quinn track down a number of former B613 agents, including Max Butler, Margot Ross, and Simon Scott, and under David’s direction offer them full immunity from prosecution and a secret grand jury hearing in an attempt to persuade Jake to agree to his deal. Olivia awakens next to Russell, although she is soon forced to abandon him to deal with a case. She is contacted by Congressman Nicholas Reed, whose father is accused of murdering his then-fifteen year-old sister’s math teacher after she committed suicide as a result of being molested by him. Congressman Reed’s father, George Reed, confessed to killing the teacher fifteen years ago and is now set to be executed despite Congressman Reed’s efforts to prevent it. He tells Olivia that he is unsure why he confessed to the killing even though he did not perpetrate it. Olivia does not believe she can help Congressman Reed, but at his urging agrees to try.

Elizabeth interviews Harmony, Mellie’s younger sister and the owner of a small soap manufacturing company, and she says that she still supports Mellie in spite of everything that has happened. Mellie finds out about the interview and is furious that it was done without her consent. Elizabeth believes that Harmony could pose a problem for Mellie’s campaign, as she perceived some deep-seated resentment on Harmony’s part. Mellie reveals that Harmony is actually her half-sister and that she does not consider her to be truly a part of her family, although Elizabeth advises her to incorporate Harmony into her campaign. Olivia visits George in prison and confronts him about apparently falsifying his crimes, although he continues to insist that he is guilty. Despite this, Olivia decides to pursue his case and get him exonerated, even over his objections.

Cyrus warns Abby about Harmony’s impending arrival and cautions her to keep her away from the press. However, he also believes that her visit will get President Grant to reconsider supporting Mellie’s campaign. Harmony is greeted by Mellie, Elizabeth, and Cyrus, who all feign enthusiasm for her arrival and show her around the White House. Olivia reviews the particulars of George’s case with Huck and Quinn and his daughter Jamie’s affair with her math teacher, Daniel Hoffman. Following a hunch, Olivia has them track down several other women who claim to have had affairs with Hoffman as teenagers. They come to suspect that Hoffman may have been murdered by other angry parents or by his ex-wife. Olivia tries to find Hoffman’s ex-wife but instead finds her sister, who informs her that she recently passed away from pancreatic cancer. Charlie finds Simon, Margot, and Max all murdered, with Jake standing over their bodies. They have a fight and Jake manages to get away.

Charlie suggests to Quinn and Huck that they should kill Jake. Quinn refuses, although Huck seems to agree with Charlie since he feels that Jake is in “survival mode” and can no longer be reasoned with. They persuade Quinn to assist them, albeit reluctantly. Before they can do that, however, Olivia has them search Hoffman’s ex-wife’s house for any evidence that she might have killed Hoffman. They discover a gun in her basement matching the one supposedly used in the murder. They allow the police to discover it on an anonymous tip so as to provide a ballistics report to confirm its usage. Meanwhile, Huck gets a lead on Jake’s position and he and Quinn begin their pursuit. Harmony has dinner at the White House with Mellie and President Grant, although she soon gets into an argument with Mellie, insulting Harmony’s lifestyle and her mother until President Grant breaks it up. Charlie goes out on the street to track down Jake, assisted over the phone by Huck and Quinn. They discover that Jake is inside Olivia’s apartment building and believe that he may have harmed her, rushing to see if she is all right.

President Grant talks to Mellie in private later and asks her to apologize to Harmony, believing that she poses a danger to her campaign. Mellie is unwilling, although President Grant points out that the job of president often entails unpleasant decisions such as this. Mellie counters that he did not do enough to make Harmony feel welcome, and that he should be assuming the role she always played for him. Quinn and Huck find Olivia in her apartment along with Russell, relieved that she is safe. Olivia closes her door and Jake emerges from across the hall, claiming that Olivia will remain safe as long as they leave him alone. They decide not to pursue him for the time being and consult with David, believing that the need to kill him is greater than ever, although they feel powerless to do anything about it. Before Harmony leaves, President Grant speaks to her in private and apologizes on Mellie’s behalf, claiming that her behavior is the result of a psychological “void” created when their father remarried. This changes Harmony’s mind about Mellie, and they part on better terms than before.

Olivia confers with George and Congressman Reed, revealing that the ballistics report matched Hoffman’s ex-wife’s gun to the one used to kill Hoffman. However, Olivia finds the discovery of the gun to be rather suspicious; it had no rust on it despite ostensibly being locked away in a basement for fifteen years. She believes that this indicates that the gun was specifically planted in order to implicate Hoffman’s ex-wife as the murderer. She accuses Congressman Reed of being the true culprit, having waited until Hoffman’s ex-wife’s death for an opportunity to put his plan into action. George tells Congressman Reed to remain silent, implying that his confession was done in order to protect him. Once he leaves, Congressman Reed admits to Olivia that George threatened to commit suicide if he ever confessed, and admits that he is the murderer.

David decides to bring himself in as a witness, recalling how he witnessed Jake murdering James. Olivia tries to convince George to change his mind about letting Congressman Reed confess to the murder of Hoffman. George points out that Congressman Reed has done a great deal with his life since then, but Olivia counters that he has virtually no life outside of his work and is “trapped.” She is successful and Congressman Reed resigns from Congress, confessing to the murder in a press conference. He is arrested and George is released from prison. Jake sneaks up on David in a parking lot and has a standoff with his assistant Holly as they hold each other at gunpoint. He claims that Holly is actually the one responsible for murdering the former B613 agents. Jake shoots and kills her while she is momentarily distracted, revealing that she worked for B613. Olivia reveals to Huck that Jake already let her in on the nature of his investigation and berates him for lying to her. Russell comes to see Olivia again, but this time is accompanied by Rowan. Includes commercials.
