SANFORD ARMS: BYE, FRED, HI, PHIL {SERIES PREMIERE} (TV)

Summary

The first in this comedy series, a spin-off of "Sanford and Son," about widower Phil Wheeler and his attempts to run a hotel in Fred Sanford's former home with the help of his two children.

In this episode, Grady Wilson arrives with his wife Dolly to visit his pal Fred and is surprised to learn that he and Lamont have moved to Arizona. The couple decides to spend their "second honeymoon" at the Sanford Arms and haggles over the price, though Phil privately admits to Bubba the bellboy that the hotel is not making nearly enough money. Tough Aunt Esther comes by to demand Phil's $300 mortgage payment, though Phil very nearly charms her into forgetting about the money. Despite his suggestion to put her picture in a magazine celebrating the "Hotel of the Month," she orders him to gather the money by the following day. Phil's girlfriend Jeannie stops by, annoyed that he has stood her up yet again, and Phil's son Nat arrives home and offers his meager earnings from tutoring to his father, though Phil urges him to keep it.

Phil's daughter Angie then reveals that she has found a job, as a cocktail waitress, but Phil objects strongly when he sees her skimpy work outfit and instructs her to quit, though Grady seems to approve of her attire. Angie heads off to work nonetheless, and when Phil stays up late waiting for her, Nat reminds him that they agreed to be "the three Musketeers" and work together as a family after the death of their mother. Angie returns home late and apologizes for the dispute, though states that she plans to honor her commitment and keep the job. When Esther returns for the rent, Nat sadly offers to pay her out of the money left by his mother's insurance payment, which is actually intended for his own education. Feeling guilty, Esther offers Phil two more weeks to scrape it together. Later, Phil happily takes his kids on a driving tour of L.A., bringing along some of Angie's questionable cooking.
