Summary
One in a series of seminars presented by The Paley Center for Media in Los Angeles. This seminar honors “Undateable,” a comedy series about a single man in his thirties and his friends, all of whom have difficulty pursuing romantic relationships for one reason or another. The episode “A Live Show Walks Into a Bar” is shown in its entirety (For synopsis and credits SEE ACCNUM 123797). Host Rene Reyes (director of programs, The Paley Center for Media) offers opening remarks.
Sandra Gonzalez (senior television reporter, Mashable) moderates the following panelists: executive producer and creator Adam Sztykiel; executive producer Bill Lawrence; and cast members Rick Glassman (Burski), David Fynn (Brett), Bianca Kajlich (Leslie Burton), Bridgit Mendler (Candace), Brent Morin (Justin Kearney), and Chris D’Elia (Danny Burton).
The panelists touch on such topics as: the filming of the live episode and the “danger element” inherent to it; the show’s balance between comedy and “spontaneity”; the upcoming third season of the show, which will consist entirely of episodes filmed live; the challenges associated with filming a live sitcom; the nature of the show’s romantic relationships and “will they won’t they” trope; and the casting of the show, utilizing people who were already friends in real life.
Questions from the audience then lead to a discussion of the following topics among others: the theatrical and musical backgrounds of some cast members; the possible return of a guest character portrayed by Briga Heelan (Nicki); the audition process for the show; the conceptual origins of the all-live season; the question of the cast’s professionalism; and the cast’s reactions to the scripts for the second season.
