NCIS: LOS ANGELES: ACTIVE MEASURES {SEASON SEVEN PREMIERE} (TV)
Summary
One in this dramatic crime series, spun off from the series "NCIS," about the undercover operations of the Office of Special Projects in Los Angeles.
Callen takes to the streets and receives a package containing information on Arkady from Sabatino. He is cornered by Sam in an alley who manages to dispatch an assailant before Callen can see him. Sam asks him about what he is doing, but Callen refuses to tell him and walks off. Later Hetty sneaks in to Callen’s house and confronts him, asking him to explain his recent behavior. He offers no explanation and refuses to report to the office when she asks him to do so. Granger speaks to Sam about Callen, and Sam theorizes that Callen is working on something personal that he feels is not yet worth bringing to their attention. Sam discovers that Beale has been approved for firearms training and Sam takes it upon himself to train him, although he believes this is a bad idea. He takes the opportunity to ask Beale to monitor Callen’s activities, and Beale reluctantly agrees.
The team conducts research and discovers that Callen was meeting with Sabatino, although they are uncertain as to what purpose. Sam and Hetty worry about Callen, noting that despite their years together they cannot fully control or understand him. Callen visits Kirkin and asks him to help him locate Arkady in exchange for turning over CIA documents on his operation. Kirkin refuses, believing that Callen would not betray the CIA in such a manner, and instead asks Callen to recover a valuable painting stolen from him; Callen deduces that the painting was initially stolen by Kirkin himself, thus explaining why he did not alert the police to its theft. The painting is now in possession of a criminal calling himself “The Gargula,” and Callen agrees to the deal. Granger goes to see Sabatino to identify the man Sam shot, a notorious Venezuelan criminal whom he says was following him. He also tells Granger that Callen was meeting with him to further his pursuit of Arkady and that he asked about Kirkin. This allows the team to intuit Callen’s activities, although they are still uncertain of what Callen got from Kirkin.
Callen disguises himself as a construction worker and uses a tiny remote-controlled surveillance drone to inspect the house holding the stolen painting. Meanwhile, Sam gets into Callen’s home and Callen monitors him simultaneously. Sam, knowing that Callen is likely watching him, speaks to him and asks him to meet with him face-to-face. Granger calls Sam back into the office, but Sam asks Callen to call him. Meeks ponders why he is under investigation and reveals to Kensi that he caught a government agent rooting through his recycling bin. She is upset that he did not tell her about it sooner. He also recounts his first assignment with the police department, partnered up with an “old-school” detective fond of using brutal interrogation tactics. Meeks claims that the detective is dead and that he does not know how he died, theorizing that he was shot by a prostitute after he assaulted her. Before they can discuss the matter further they are called back to the office by Granger as well.
Granger discusses the situation surrounding Callen with Hetty, and he fears that Callen may create an international incident by going after Arkady. He asks that Callen be arrested before he can proceed, although Hetty believes it is wrong to ask the team to do so. The team protests this order but, concerned about Callen and his potential actions, agrees to seek him out. Their various tracking methods prove fruitless until Sam realizes that the CIA likely has Kirkin under electronic surveillance, and that they may be able to determine information about Callen’s whereabouts by accessing their information. They call in Sabatino to brief them on Kirkin, but are interrupted when they discover that Callen is in a car chase being pursued by the LAPD. The team rushes to pursue Callen, having abandoned his car and fled on foot. Hetty emerges and confronts Callen, and when he tries to run she incapacitates him with a Taser. However, Callen manages to extricate himself and continues fleeing. Sam sneaks up on Callen and grabs him, trying to reason with him. Callen manages to convince Sam to let him go, and he continues fleeing.
Later Hetty upbraids Sam for allowing Callen to escape and they get into an argument. Granger breaks it up and tries to get the team to cooperate. Sam reveals that he secretly placed a tracking device on Callen before he let him go, allowing them to learn his location. Callen breaks in to steal the painting, but suddenly is confronted by Kirkin and his goons. Kirkin explains that he just brokered a deal to turn in Callen to his business associate in exchange for the painting. Callen manages to escape and the team, waiting outside, gets Kirkin and his men to disarm themselves. Callen reveals that he knew about the tracking device and allowed the team to track him, thus saving himself from Kirkin. Beale and Nell determine that the painting is an original which was stolen from an art museum in Boston several months ago. Hetty apologizes to Sam for berating him, although he notes that she was right to be angry, as he went against orders. Hetty gives Callen a list of Kirkin’s gang contacts in Russia and information on Arkady, cautioning him not to use it without her consent. Commercials deleted.
