FAMILY MATTERS: TORN BETWEEN TWO LOVERS (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy series about the Winslows, an African-American family living in Chicago next door to their annoying neighbor, Steve Urkel.

The opening of Rachel’s Place goes well, and Rachel receives a visit from Steve Webster, her loan officer at the bank who assisted greatly in the financial aspect of the opening. He makes romantic overtures towards her, and she finds them quite flattering. He asks her out to dinner and she accepts. Eddie’s girlfriend Jolene breaks up with him, furious that he asked another girl out on a date. Urkel comes to believe that Rachel may have romantic feelings for him due to his misinterpretation of remarks about his usefulness to the restaurant. He asks Eddie for advice and soon finds Rachel’s notepad with the name “Steve” doodled about it; he is unaware of Steve Webster and believes it refers to himself, crystallizing his suspicions about Rachel.

Rachel speaks in private to Harriette and Estelle about her date with Steve, noting that she rather enjoys going out with him but is concerned about dating a younger man. Urkel accidentally eavesdrops on the conversation and again believes that Rachel is talking about him, and is unsure of how to react. Rachel plans to invite Steve to the restaurant that Sunday for a private romantic dinner, and she comes out to ask Urkel to help staff the place. Urkel, believing she is asking him out, is nervous and reluctantly agrees. Urkel asks Carl for advice, declining to mention the identity of the woman he believes has fallen in love with him. Carl advises him to seize the opportunity, noting the unlikelihood of a woman being attracted to him. On Sunday Rachel prepares for her dinner and Urkel arrives in a tuxedo, trying his best to act debonair. Rachel asks him to explain himself and realizes that there has been a misunderstanding. Before she can set Urkel straight, he suddenly experiences guilt for abandoning his pursuit of Laura and realizes that he loves her and no one else. Rachel plays along as Urkel apologizes for having “toyed with [her] affections.” He leaves just as Steve Webster arrives. After he leaves, Rachel and Steve enjoy a romantic evening together; she notes that she has gotten over her concerns about their age difference. Includes commercials.
