BLACK-ISH: JACKED O' LANTERN (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy series about an affluent black family and their attempts to maintain their cultural identity.
In this episode, Dre happily prepares for Halloween and the arrival of his kids' "hood cousins" in their wealthy, "good-candy neighborhood." The family dons their First Family-themed costumes, though Ruby denounces the entire holiday as "pagan." Dre, feeling that his kids could use some toughening-up, encourages them to "rough-house" with their cousins if need be. Rainbow is taken aback when neighbor Janine informs her that the parents have hired a "safety ambassador" and intend to impose a 9:00 curfew for trick-or-treating. When their tough cousins arrive, Dre is surprised to see that their intimidating adult relative, "Junebug," has joined them. The Johnson kids, having prepared extensively for the annual event, fight back against their cousins' playful taunts, but Dre is quickly "defeated" by Junebug. That promps Junebug's children to conclude that he is "a little punk." The Johnson kids' attempts to befriend their cousins are firmly rebuffed; they turn to some overly personal insults to psych them out. Elsewhere, Rainbow finds herself intimidated by rambunctious trick-or-treaters, to whom Ruby hands out Bibles.
Rainbow soon finds an abashed Dre "fixing the sink," and she suggests that Junebug has simply always been jealous of his wealth and success. The kids fret that they "ruined" their edgy cousins with their acerbic words. The night worsens when their candy is stolen by some mean hoverboard-riding rich kids. Junebug laughs off Dre's suggestion that he is envious of him and forces "Tea Kettle" to admit to his embarrassing childhood nickname. The kids are pleased when their cousins declare that they will help them to recover their stolen candy out of a sense of familial loyalty. Ruby informs Dre that Junebug has long been his "savior" and has always tried to protect him from anything that might have derailed his dreams. Rainbow ends up giving in to Janine's strict rules, having found that the local kids are scarier than she expected. Dre thanks his "brother" Junebug for his years of tough love, and all of the cousins return in triumph, having learned to appreciate one another. Includes commercials.
