MODERN FAMILY: WHITE CHRISTMAS (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy series, a "mockumentary" about the eccentric individuals comprising three inter-related families in Los Angeles. In this episode, Gloria explains that she has rented a cabin for the holidays, excited to have a proper "white Christmas" for the first time. Cam and Mitch prepare to redeem themselves after an embarrassing carol fiasco from a previous year as Phil rhapsodizes about his new sheepskin coat, but when they arrive at the cabin, it proves highly inappropriate for the balmy, non-snow weather. Haley and Andy continue their clandestine affair, and the family is surprised by the presence of Fig, a cantankerous resident who was unaware of the new renters, and they are forced to invite her to spend the holiday with them. Lily is unimpressed by Luke and Manny's attempts to scare her with a ghost tale, and Andy is wracked with guilt when Phil tells him all about the "fidelity" expected of him as a newly licensed realtor. Alex is thrilled to learn that Fig is actually an astrophysics expert who dislikes forced holiday cheer as much as she does, and Claire is deeply offended when Jay announces that he is retiring and turning his business over to one Chuck Feeny – though Jay privately reveals that Chuck Feeny is a mere invention intended to motivate Claire to fight for the job.

Cam and Mitch hastily attempt to distract a tone-deaf Lily when she asks to join in with their carefully rehearsed carol, and Alex begins to worry that the grumpy Fig is her own "Ghost of Christmas Future" and decides to join in the fun after all. Jay's plan backfires when Claire angrily rejects his "boring" career, and Lily, frightened by what she believes to be ghosts, distracts everyone from her fathers' song and when everyone runs to her aid, they catch Haley and Andy together. Beth arrives for a surprise visit, and Phil sternly scolds Andy and orders him to make things right. Alex entices Fig into being nice after all, and Cam and Mitch are outraged when the two "steal" their performance of "Silent Night." Beth reveals that she herself is cheating on Andy and quickly leaves the house, though Haley is taken aback to see that he is hurt by the betrayal. Gloria finally puts an end to all the bickering and reveals Jay's trick to Claire, who happily accepts the CEO position. Everyone is thrilled when it finally begins snowing – or rather, raining ash from a local fire. Later, the family departs the house with fond memories, though Luke is left behind with the "ghost." Includes commercials and promos.
