MODERN FAMILY: A TALE OF THREE CITIES {EIGHTH SEASON PREMIERE} (TV)

Summary

The eighth season premiere in this comedy series, a "mockumentary" about the eccentric individuals comprising three inter-related families in Los Angeles. In this episode, after a week-long vacation in New York City, Phil and Claire send their kids home and then decide to secretly stay for a few extra days, rather than heading onto Raleigh for a "closet caucus" — unaware that the three kids have also chosen to remain in NYC. Mitch, spending the summer in Missouri, grows impatient with Cam's grandmother's extremely slow decline and is then inadvertently blamed for her demise, and in Juarez, Gloria and Jay flee a family wedding after a run-in with Gloria bizarre and jealous sister Sonia. Alex, Haley and Luke lie to their parents about being home in California, not realizing that they're actually hotel neighbors, though best buds Luke and Phil begin to miss one another while enjoying their respective sightseeing adventures.

Back at home, Jay is shocked when his Father's Day celebrations are interrupted by Manny's "kidnapping" by Sonia, but Gloria, unfazed by the familiar tactic, explains that her sister is simply trying to steal her hot sauce business. Phil and Claire sneak back into their house, and Mitch, having been "banished" by Cam's family, tells his sister all about the bizarre misunderstanding. Manny begins to develop Stockholm Syndrome as Sonia explains her side of things, and Gloria admits to Jay that the sauce family recipe actually was partially Sonia's to begin with. Sonia soon returns her nephew, annoyed by his amorous declarations, and the sisters agree that their rivalry stems from their competition over their father's love, which alarms Jay. Cam and Lily return to spend the holiday with Mitch, though Mitch and Lily are then surprised by Grams' "gifts" to them from the afterlife. Over dinner, Claire is outraged when Luke suddenly confesses to their trick, though Haley figures out that their parents did the exact same thing, and an annoyed Jay declares his family to be "bad at Father's Day." Includes commercials and promos.
