DETOUR, THE: THE CITY {SEASON TWO PREMIERE} (TV)

Summary

The second season premiere in this comedy series about the mishap-plagued travels of the dysfunctional Parker family. In this episode, after an awkward afternoon of games with Janice and Chris, Robin assures a frustrated Nate that their lives will soon turn around, because "good things happen to good people." Nate then heads to an upscale men's club and is amazed when the intimidating J.R., who is impressed with Nate's "principled" exit from his previous job, offers him a position marketing "structured hydro-nutrients." The family immediately prepares to depart "redneck" Syracuse and move back to New York City, though Robin is soon found to be on the "no-fly list," forcing them to head for the bus station. Robin, feeling that it is "a sign," frets that they do not belong in the big city, but she is quickly outvoted and, when the bus leaves without them, they make the drive in an oversized truck. Once in Manhattan, Jared immediately offends some passersby with his seemingly insensitive racial comments, and Nate is hit by a cab when he tries to make a point about jaywalking. At their new apartment building, they encounter doorman Paddy and Jared instantly falls in love with Chase – whose family has not vacated the Parkers' new apartment, 5B.

Nate admits that he rented the place sight unseen as the current residents, Harris and his mother, argue that they did not agree to leave the apartment, and Robin encounters a familiar face from her "old life" as Nate attempts to parallel-park the enormous truck, much to the frustration of some nearby firemen. Jared's attempts to flirt with Chase fall extravagantly flat, and a nosy neighbor, Lars, weighs in on the Parkers' debate with Harris, confident that they are motivated by racism. Paddy joins in and finally discovers that he sent the Parkers to the wrong door, revealing that they are meant to move into 5D. When Nate's terrible parking as misinterpreted as a hate crime, Paddy suggests that New York is "not for them" after all. Nevertheless, the Parkers settle into their new home, though Robin is still upset about their luggage, including a strange metal sculpture, which is still on the absent bus. Elsewhere, Carlos arrives in New York and questions the bus driver, still on the hunt for Robin. Commercials deleted.
