ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK: TRUST NO BITCH {THIRD SEASON FINALE} (TV)
Summary
The third season finale in this comedy-drama series based on the memoir by Piper Kerman about a preppy young woman's experience in a women's prison. In this episode, during Movie Night, Big Boo and Pennsatucky debate what to do with the still-unconscious "Donuts," with Pennsatucky admitting that she cannot bring herself to sexually assault him as revenge. Poussey, Taystee and Suzanne find that Soso has overdosed on Benadryl, and they attempt to revive her themselves to save her from Psych. In the past, Soso's harsh mother drills her through piano practice, while elsewhere Healy realizes that Katya is truly unhappy to be "imprisoned" with him. Upset that several of Norma's "followers" have abandoned her, Leanne decides that they need a "sign" to inspire them. Flaca begs Piper to allow her back into the illicit underwear-mailing company, citing her mother's illness, though Alex warns Piper that she cannot truly be a "benevolent dictator." Gloria suffers guilt over Sophia's imprisonment in the SHU, and when Vinnie attempts to break up with Lorna, saying that her sentence makes things too difficult, she proposes to him on the spot and he accepts. In the past, young Lorna is more excited by her First Holy Communion dress than by the sacrament itself. Red is exasperated when Leanne, Angie, Gina and others are awed by the saintly image of a "Toast Norma," and Poussey tries to convince her friends to accept Soso as one of them as she sleeps off her anti-histamine binge. Cindy continues her plans to convert to Judaism, and Janae recalls her father's harsh treatment when she herself rejected her Nation of Islam upbringing.
Daya returns to prison after giving birth, furious with her mother for arranging for Cesar to take the baby from Mendez's mother, but Aleida assures her that she has done her a favor by keeping her daughter in her life. Caputo and Danny meet with Danny's father Jack to negotiate for Sophia's release, but Jack remains focused on the financial aspects of keeping her in "protective custody" and a furious Danny ends up quitting in protest. Lolly tells Alex of her paranoia about the new guards, particularly "Toothpick Guy," and when Healy summons Soso and tries to blame her depression on Berdie Rogers' unorthodox methods, Soso bluntly informs him that he is "really bad at his job." Stella, preparing to be released, gives Piper a white-ink tattoo as a farewell present, and when Gloria seeks "confession," Sister Ingalls admits that self-forgiveness can be challenging "in this place," and in the past, Gloria learns that her child is a boy after all. Cindy sits down with Rabbi Alan Tatelbaum, and though he is at first skeptical of her sincerity in wanting to convert, she grows emotional as she explains that she has "found her people" and he grants her request, though adds that she will have to undergo a mikveh, or a submersion in naturally occurring water, before her conversion is complete. Healy asks Red about Soso's accusation, and she explains that she values their "special relationship" despite his personal flaws. Cal reacts to surprise to Piper's "trust no bitch" body art and reveals that someone has stolen all of Piper's prison money, leading her to immediately suspect Flaca.
Poussey angrily confronts Norma about her false "divinity," and when Coates attempts to resume sexual relations with Pennsatucky in the van, she experiences a seizure and drives off the road. Caputo and Fig spend an unpleasant evening together, and she urges him to "do what he has to do" to secure a promotion to Danny's former position for himself. Gloria defends Flaca when Piper angrily confronts her about the stolen money, and Norma scorns Leanne's desperate apologies for the toast fraud. Pennsatucky happily tells Boo about escaping van duty, revealing that she faked the seizure, though they are both concerned to see that Maritza has taken her place and will now be riding with Coates. In the past, young Boo experiences a heart arrhythmia and awakens declaring that there is "nothing" on the other side. Piper figures out that Stella is the real thief, though the other women assume that she will let it go because of their romantic connection, and Lorna and Vince are married in a hasty jailhouse ceremony. Though they are technically forbidden from a conjugal visit, Bell generously allows them some "private time" in the break room, and Healy reveals his true feelings for Red as they discuss the meaning of "happily ever after." In the past, young Healy seeks help for his sick mother, but finds only a "hobo Jesus." Everyone is shocked when Piper, far from forgiving Stella, plants contraband in her bunk and has her sent to Max mere days before her release in a show of Machiavellian ruthlessness. Caputo announces that he has received a promotion and taken Danny's job, but the other guards are disgusted by his betrayal and walk out in protest. Alex, left alone in the greenhouse, finds out that Lolly was right about "Toothpick Guy," who is really Kubra's lieutenant Aydin, and she frantically begs him not to kill her. Cesar is arrested at his home, leaving Daya's baby with Children's Services, and as Piper gives herself another homemade tattoo, Judy King arrives to turn herself in and is offended when no one is there to meet her.
New bunks arrive at the prison, and the women are overjoyed to see that a large piece of fence has been mistakenly removed, allowing them access to the adjacent lake. Everyone rushes in for a swim, with the few remaining guards unable to intervene, and Cindy happily undergoes her mikveh with the help of Ginsberg. Maureen and Suzanne strike up a flirtation as Poussey and Soso decide to embark on a relationship, and Daya and Aleida finally make amends. Unbeknownst to the women, their beds are replaced with bunkbeds as a large number of new prisoners arrive to join the already-overcrowded Litchfield.
