BLUE BLOODS: OUT OF THE BLUE (TV)

Summary

One in this drama series about a multi-generational family of police officers in New York City. In this episode, experienced NYPD detective Arthur Hines is shot dead in his front yard, uttering the name "Cofey," as in Robert Cofey, the mobster against whom he was set to testify, as he expires. Elsewhere, Garrett is outraged when he and Cynthia are "swatted" at their home, and Frank wonders why someone would seek such dangerous revenge against him. Danny and Maria interview the widow Hines, who admits that Arthur told her little about his work, but recently mentioned that a "two-bit clown" associate of Coffee's had threatened him. Anthony's shifty associate Jimmy Pearson tracks down Erin at the gym and offers her a "proposition," swearing that he can help her to finally arrest criminal Benny Tomassi, who has recently placed dimwitted son Carlo in charge of his stolen-car operation. Hines' partner Patrick Ogden confirms that mid-level hood Victor Lugo threatened Hines shortly before his death, and video surveillance footage seems to show the encounter.

Erin places Jimmy on the payroll as an official C.I., but Anthony roundly denounces the plan, sure that the unreliable Jimmy cannot be trusted to bring useful results. Frank is frustrated to learn that Garrett requires additional time off to care for Cynthia, who is deeply shaken after the swatting incident, and when Danny and Maria find Lugo at a barbershop, Lugo's snide comments about Linda prompt Danny to attack him. Lugo soon arrives at the precinct with a lawyer, accusing Danny of nearly killing him and revealing that he has an alibi for the time of Hines' death. Jimmy, wearing a wire, arrives at Carlo's garage and convinces him to buy a "stolen" Porsche, and both Erin and Anthony are pleased with his unlikely success – until Carlo's lawyer arrives and reveals that his client is currently dating Jimmy's ex, thus invalidating Erin's entire case with the appearance of personal bias. The TARU tech makes an interesting discovery on the idea of Lugo and Hines, and when Garrett and Frank begin to argue about Garrett's situation, Frank urges him to "empty the room" and think critically about who the culprit might be, leading to a surprising realization.

Danny finds that the man confronting Hines in the video is not Lugo but Ogden, and he and Maria soon realize that Ogden plotted to kill his partner because of his affair with Mrs. Hines, who deliberately handed her husband his "coffee" seconds before his death in order to incapacitate his gun hand, thus prompting his final words. Anthony pays Jimmy a late-night visit and "convinces" him to confess to several past car thefts, meaning that Erin's case can now go ahead, as Carlo's "co-defendant" is also locked up. Frank and Garrett observe interrogation footage of the "swatter," blind teenager Adam Cassir, who sought revenge against Garrett for his apparent prejudice when he denied Adam the "Commissioner for a Day" spot in the wake of Linda's tragic death. With the case closed, Garrett decides to return to work, and Frank promotes him to Deputy Commissioner. At Sunday-night dinner, tensions flare when Jamie wonders aloud how Danny could have missed Mrs. Hines' obvious guilt, and no one is entirely convinced when Danny informs his family that he is "fine."
