ORVILLE, THE: MAD IDOLATRY {SEASON ONE FINALE} (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy science-fiction series about the oddball crew of The Orville, an outer-space exploratory vessel roaming the cosmos in the 25th century.

In this episode, Ed socializes with Bortus and Klyden, resulting in his hand being impaled. Kelly is instructed to heal the wound with a demoscanner, after which she meets Ed for drinks in the mess hall. Ed tells her that he'd like for them to become romantic again. Ed stresses that he's misses their marital bond and has forgiven her infidelity. She agrees to a date. The next morning, both are nursing hangovers on the bridge when an uncharted star appears in the Orville's path. Kelly, Gordon, and Isaac quickly take a shuttle to the planet to investigate. After some exploring, Kelly sees two little girls who appear to be from an era akin to the Bronze Age, one of whom has a bad gash on her forehead. Kelly uses her demoscanner to heal the opening as elders gather around them. Kelly then runs off and the shuttle returns to the Orville. In reporting the incident, Ed purposely deletes Kelly's encounter with the girls, as the threat of "cultural contamination" would be held against her. Admiral Ozawa later tells the crew to keep circling the planet.

Suddenly, the planet disappears. Following some research, Isaac and John deduce that the planet continually travels between two universes, and is set to reappear in the Orville crew's orbit in eleven days. That evening, Ed and Kelly have their date, which ends in a passionate kiss. Eleven days later, the planet reappears and Kelly, Ed, John, and Alara travel to it. Kelly immediately realizes that a city akin to those from Earth's 14th century has been built. Isaac then realizes that the planet is in altered form because it ages 700 years during each eleven-day cycle. Inhabitants coming upon the crew believe that the Orville visitors are gods and ask for blessings.

Continuing their quest, the group soon finds a group of individuals who have been crucified for denying "the word of Kelly." Next, they see others being restrained and cut open for various crimes, followed by announcements that "the power of Kelly" will heal the wounds if the individuals are innocent. Kelly then realizes that a religion has been started in her name, based on her having healed the little girl's cut. The crew returns to the Orville and tells Ozawa of their findings, after which she forbids a return to the planet. Kelly goes back anyway and shows the church leader, Valondis, the source of her healing powers. The shocked priest declares that he'll now spread the word. However, an acolyte, fearing a loss of power for the church, kills Valondis and assumes control.

Eleven days later, the crew observes that the planet has aged another 700 years but that its inhabitants are conducting mass murders in Kelly's name. At Claire's suggestion, Isaac agrees to correct the situation by going to the planet and staying there for eleven days -- which will mean 700 years for his artificial Kaylon body -- to stop the "Kelly killings" once and for all. Accordingly, the Orville crew waits for one more eleven-day period, at which point they are boarded by newly evolved inhabitants Fadolin and Baleth, along with Isaac. Thanks to Isaac, the entire civilization now understands Kelly's true identity. Fadolin and Baleth note that, after the next eleven days, they'll start studying the Orville. When Ozawa finally learns what truly transpired, she warns Ed that a further infraction will have severe consequences for him. As a result, Kelly tells Ed that they can't resume their romance, as a personal relationship endangers their ability to be professionals. Reluctantly, Ed agrees and the crew prepares for the next mission. Commercials deleted.
