GOLDBERGS, THE: MISTER KNIFEY-HANDS (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy series about a dysfunctional Pennsylvania family in the 1980s.

In this episode, Geoff tries to persuade Erica to accompany him to the high-school Halloween dance in a witty couples costume, and Adam defies Beverly's "no scary movies" rule to watch "A Nightmare on Elm Street" with Jackie – and then loses several nights of sleep thanks to Freddy Kreuger. Erica finds that returning to her old high school is actually an "ego boost," as the younger students are all impressed with her wisdom and maturity; Beverly and Murray are outraged to learn that Jackie's "hippie" parents allowed the teens to watch such a scary film. Bev goes to great lengths to help ease her "snuggle bug" into sleeping through the night; elsewhere, Geoff and the rest of TJP begin to worry that Erica has gotten stuck in "thirteenth grade," the home to uncool alumni who can't let go of their high-school glory days.

Vinny Geary helps Adam get over his fear by introducing him to Fangoria movie magazine, but Bev and Murray soon confront Vinny and Lynn about their laissez-faire parenting style. The Gearys argue that Adam is "over-mothered," and both sets of parents end up banning their kids from hanging out. Erica, not yet 21 but desperate for "validation," tries to impress the high-schoolers with a keg of (non-alcoholic) beer, much to Principal Glascott's annoyance. A furious Adam tells Beverly that he would prefer the Gearys as parents, and Erica and Geoff abruptly break up upon realizing that they embarrass one another.

Wishing to reconnect with her son, Beverly forces herself to watch "Elm Street" and ends up having a scary dream in which "Fredward Kroeger" counsels her about having made a mistake with Adam and Jackie. Upon awakening, she apologizes to the kids and to the Gearys, deciding that their dissimilar parenting styles can be complementary rather than conflicting. Elsewhere, Erica makes amends with Geoff and heads to the dance with him, dressed as "Halls and Oats." Meanwhile, Principal Glascott uses the fake beer to win over his teachers. Includes commercials and promos.
