Summary
One in a series of evenings and special screenings presented as part of The Paley Center for Media's 36th William S. Paley Television Festival in Los Angeles. Held this year at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, the festival celebrates the excellence and diversity of American television and is dedicated to television's creative community. This PALEYFEST 2019 seminar celebrates "Hawaii Five-0," the rebooted drama series that follows members of an elite state police task force based in Hawaii led by a no-nonsense former Navy SEAL; "MacGyver," the rebooted action/adventure series about a secret U.S. government organization's operative known for his inventive survival skills; and "Magnum P.I.," the rebooted dramatic action series about the adventures of a U.S. Marine-turned-private investigator living in Hawaii.
Host Rene Reyes (executive in charge of production, The Paley Center for Media) offers opening remarks and thanks the festival's various sponsors. Reyes then welcomes Kevin Frazier (co-host, Entertainment Tonight) to the stage. He introduces a clip package with highlights from each of the three shows.
After the screening, Frazier moderates the following panelists: executive producer of "Hawaii Five-0," "MacGyver," and "Magnum P.I." Peter Lenkov; "Hawaii Five-0" cast members Alex O'Loughlin (Steve McGarrett), Chi McBride (Lou Grover), Ian Anthony Dale (Adam Noshimuri), Beulah Koale (Junior Reigns), Meaghan Rath (Tani Rey), and Kimee Balmilero (Noelani Cunha); "MacGuyver" cast members Lucas Till (Angus "Mac" MacGyver), Tristan Mays (Riley Davis), and Meredith Eaton (Matilda "Matty" Webber); and "Magnum P.I." cast members Jay Hernandez (Thomas Magnum), Zachary Knighton (Orville "Rick" Wright), Stephen Hill (Theodore "TC" Calvin), and Amy Hill (Teuila "Kumu" Tuileta).
The panelists touch on such topics as: Lenkov's love of classic TV, originating in what he perceives as a need for escapism; O'Loughlin's theory on the key to the success of "Hawaii Five-0"; Till's skill at memorizing scientific dialogue in his role as "MacGyver"; Hernandez's love for the red Ferrari that functions "as a character" on "Magnum P.I."; why each of the three shows features highly intelligent female characters; if the shows will combine for a three-way crossover in the near future; Lenkov's decision to focus on character development over action in the reboots; O'Loughlin and McBride's efforts to write scripts for their show; Hill having been in contact with Roger E. Mosley, who played the role of TC in the original "Magnum P.I."; Hernandez initially feeling intimidated after being cast as Thomas Magnum in 2018; how Till's inquisitive nature makes for similarities with his character; Jack Lord being revered in Hawaii as the first Steve McGarrett; the ethereal, spiritual rewards of working in Hawaii; Knighton getting to indulge his passion for surfing while shooting the show; why Hernandez and Knighton became roommates; and if Lenkov would consider rebooting another hit television show.
Questions from the audience then lead to a discussion of the following topics, among others: how actors working in Hawaii have been coached to adopt the Pidgin dialect; O'Loughlin's aspirations to move from acting to directing; classic shows in which the panelists wishes they could have been cast; whether the scientific factors in "MacGyver" are legitimate; the requirements for stuntmen working in "Magnum P.I."; and the decision to replace Tom Selleck, the original Thomas Magnum, with a Latino actor for the reboot.
