BOARDWALK EMPIRE: NEW YORK SOUR {FOURTH SEASON PREMIERE} (TV)

Summary

The fourth season premiere in this historical drama series based on the nonfiction book by Nelson Johnson about the gangsters and bootleggers who rose to power in Atlantic City during the years of Prohibition.

In this episode, in February 1924, Richard gradually makes his way to Wisconsin, executing several criminals along the way. Nucky, Chalky and Dunn Purnsley meet with talent booker Dickie Pastor and his wife Alma to find performers for the Onyx Club, and Nucky and Eli later meet with Joe Masseria, Luciano, Rothstein and Lansky to "settle things" in the aftermath of Rosetti's death, and they achieve a degree of peace with the help of a large suitcase of cash. Gillian, still secretly using drugs, fights for custody of Tommy; Julia angrily points out that she has been raising him in a "cathouse" – at which an explained massacre occurred eight months previously. Willie grows increasingly curious about his father and uncle's work, and crooked Agent Sawicki brings his new by-the-book protégé Warren Knox to the warehouse, where Elmer Borst tries to recruit him into helping to protect his hooch stash.

In Illinois, Al is outraged when a "Bolshie-type" reporter writes about Torrio's criminal actions – and spells "Capone" wrong in doing so. Elsewhere, Nucky strikes up a flirtation with Pauline, Eddie Cantor's latest starlet. Gillian makes an "offer" to a prospective buyer who is interested in more than her house, and during a Thompson family dinner, Willie asks Nucky to let him into "their" business. Nucky acknowledges his nephew's helpfulness during Eli's incarceration, but urges him to focus on his studies at Temple University rather than involving himself in crime. Al's brother Frank continues teasing him about the insulting newspaper article, and Purnsley engages in a secret tryst with Alma Pastor. However, he is caught and humiliated by Dickie, whom he then murders in a rage. Knox, apparently worried about "Supervisor Eliot's" approval, tells Sawicki about Elmer's request as they stake out his warehouse.

Chalky, Nucky and Eli are frustrated to learn of Purnsley's impulsive actions and force him to dispose of Pastor's body himself, though the treacherous Alma's whereabouts remain unknown. Gillian meets with the polite Roy Phillips, who observes that she doesn't really wish to sell her home and requests that she assist him in finding another property. Al visits the young reporter and teaches him a stern lesson; Knox knowingly allows Sawicki to walk into Borst's shotgun booby-trap and then executes Borst himself, coldly watching as his corrupt partner dies in the snow. Nucky enjoys an evening with Pauline, but then has Eddie "escort" her out of his hotel home when he realizes that, having heard about his past with Billie Kent, she is merely using him for his showbiz connections. Finally, Richard arrives in Plover – and reunites with his twin sister, Emma.
