BOARDWALK EMPIRE: ACRES OF DIAMONDS (TV)

Summary

One in this historical drama series based on the nonfiction book by Nelson Johnson about the gangsters and bootleggers who rose to power in Atlantic City during the years of Prohibition.

In this episode, Nucky journeys to Tampa and meets with Bill McCoy, while back in Harlem Narcisse educates his followers on "the new Negro" and then sits down with Rothstein to discuss a new arrangement for heroin. In Wisconsin, Richard buries his pistol as Emma plays hostess to the somewhat annoying but well-meaning Hubert McCready. When Richard offers Emma money – his fee from Carl Billings – for her back taxes, she insists that she has already paid. Nucky talks to salesman Skeeter Walsh, who explains that much of Florida's "swampland" is in fact promising real estate; in Philadelphia, Willie tries to impress his classmates by promising to procure some illegal hooch for an upcoming party.

Still looking for available rooms, Roy invites Gillian to accompany him to a business dinner – as his "wife." Narcisse brings beautiful jazz singer Daughter Maitland to the Onyx Club, again suggesting that Chalky should part ways with the "brutish" Dunn. Willie is embarrassed when Mickey Doyle tries to kick him out of the warehouse and threatens to tell Eli about his request; Mickey eventually gives in and allows Willie to take a crate. As Richard examines his and Emma's childhood belongings, Billings and his men burst in and confront him for not finishing the "job" for which he was hired. When Billings attempts to do Richard "a favor" by executing him, Emma shoots him dead, shocked by the violence her twin has brought home. McCoy introduces Nucky to his new partner, garrulous Southerner August Tucker, but Nucky immediately rejects the idea of a new bootlegging arrangement, pointing out that the excessive land development going on in Tampa poses too much risk to their secret business.

Gillian, Roy and his friends enjoy "coffee" and Daughter Maitland's performance at the Onyx Club; Willie's accomplishment gets him a few private moments alone with Doris after she rejects a too-aggressive Henry. McCoy confesses that he owes Tucker quite a bit of money and promises to settle his debt by securing his "friend" Nucky's involvement in their deal; Gillian, joking with her "husband," is flustered when a friend of Roger McAllister's recognizes her in public. Roy ushers the boy away, and Gillian absconds to the ladies' room to feed her habit. Henry humiliates Willie by bursting in on his moment with Doris, and Nucky bonds with bartender Sally Wheet, telling her about his "son" Teddy's birthday. Narcisse visits Dunn and, suggesting that Chalky uses him for "slave labor," easily entices him into joining his heroin business. McCoy panics about his serious debt, and Richard prepares to leave Wisconsin, sadly admitting that he thought of nothing but returning home to his family during dark times in the war. Emma embraces him, firmly telling him to "call himself to account." Sally sends Nucky a gift for Teddy, and Nucky reconsiders McCoy's offer and tells him that he is "in" – unaware that McCoy has already murdered Tucker in a fit of rage.
