BOARDWALK EMPIRE: THE NORTH STAR (TV)
Summary
One in this historical drama series based on the nonfiction book by Nelson Johnson about the gangsters and bootleggers who rose to power in Atlantic City during the years of Prohibition.
In this episode, Nucky passes through New York on his way back to Florida and has a brief, uncomfortable reunion with Margaret, who reveals only that she's working in an office and is "trying to get on with it." Nucky passes on a gift for Teddy and, unable to admit the full truth, says that Eddie has "gone." Elsewhere, Hoover scolds Knox for losing his one key informant in the implausible bootlegging scheme, but Knox pleads for another chance to prove his theory. Eli and Mickey search Eddie's room for his safe-deposit key, though the bank manager refuses to allow Eli access to the box without legal permission; Chalky finds himself growing strangely obsessed with Daughter Maitland. At the doctor's office, Paul receives some grim news and then runs into the long-absent Richard, who admits that he couldn't face the Sagorskys after the slaughter at Gillian's bordello. Paul, however, reveals that he's dying of cirrhosis and, having committed some wartime atrocities of his own, now cares only that Richard has returned to Julia and Tommy.
Eli loses sleep worrying about Eddie's sons and his own, and in Tampa, Bill McCoy assures Nucky that he can replace Tucker – who he murdered in an impulsive rage – with a new business partner, "Mr. Pierce." When Knox visits Eli and Mickey again, Eli instructs him to use his FBI credentials to obtain the contents of the safe-deposit box. Nucky meets Pierce, in reality Vincenzo Petrucelli; though Nucky seems satisfied with his offer, Luciano panics when Petrucelli hints that he knows Joe Masseria, afraid of his boss' reaction to learning that his protégé has entered into a business deal without him. Lucky ponders simply murdering Petrucelli to conceal the secret; Meyer sternly refuses and resolves to go ahead with the deal, leading the two longtime pals to go their separate ways. Eli is stunned to find that, far from stealing it for himself, Eddie placed all of the money in the safe-deposit box, as ordered, making his sudden suicide even more of a mystery. Knox, knowing full well why Eddie took his life, is taken aback when Eli grows emotional over a fellow father's demise.
Nucky spends some time with Sally, falling into something of an existential crisis as he laments his "friend's" mysterious death and his own questionable life choices, though Sally grows tired of his "whining," and their scuffle turns amorous. Richard finally reunites with Tommy and Julia. Frustrated by his abrupt departure and long absence, Julia explains that the custody battle with Gillian is still dragging on, hampered by their inability to discuss "what happened" on the night of Tommy's rescue. Back in Florida, Meyer informs Nucky that Luciano is "out," and a surprised McCoy receives his finder's fee as Nucky prepares to head back north, leaving Sally in charge of his portion of the deal. Elsewhere, Chalky gives in to his attraction to Daughter Maitland.
