PALEY CENTER FOR MEDIA, THE: PALEYIMPACT: HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH: HHM HISPANIC VOICES IN MEDIA {EDITED MASTER}

Summary

One in a series of evenings and special screenings presented by The Paley Center for Media. This program in the Paley Center's virtual conversation series about news events and current affairs, PaleyIMPACT, addresses the importance of Hispanic Americans in the media, particularly in relation to current political and social events.

After opening remarks from host Rene Reyes (vice-president of programming, The Paley Center for Media), Mariana Atencio (journalist/author) moderates the following panelists: Ana Cabrera, (anchor and correspondent, CNN); José Díaz-Balart, (anchor, Noticias Telemundo and NBC Nightly News); León Krauze (news anchor, Univision; columnist, The Washington Post); Tom Llamas (weekend anchor, World News Tonight; chief national affairs correspondent, ABC News); and Bryan Llenas (national correspondent, FOX News).

The panelists touch on such topics as: their varied backgrounds and journeys to having television careers, including how Pope Francis, who hails from Argentina, "changed Llenas' life"; Atencio's visit to the Paley Center to view the Nixon/Kennedy 1960 presidential debates; Krauze's experience conducting in-person interviews with thousands of immigrants and Latino individuals; the importance of television news, particularly for undocumented immigrants, who use TV as a "safe" method of connecting to their past, present, and future; their sense of responsibility in being trusted public figures; Latinos as the largest non-white voting block in the 2020 presidential election, with numbers having grown since 2016; the disproportionate affect of the COVID-19 pandemic on the Latino community, both in those who are becoming ill and in economic impacts; their interest in shedding lights on such situations and highlighting diverse voices; the need to increase the Hispanic presence in newsrooms, both in front of and behind the camera, to offer nuance and highlight specific concerns in broader stories; Llenas' interest in bring about internal change at Fox; the lack of a Latino moderator at any American presidential debate, despite their growing voter numbers; fractiousness within the community between different discrete nationalities; why a strong work ethic and a sense of gratitude for one's adoptive country may cause Latinos to protest and speak out about injustices less often; how Cabrera has developed the courage to advocate for herself in the workplace; Díaz-Balart's desire for not just "a place at the table," but "to own the table"; current NBCUniversal News Group Chairman Cesar Conde's plans for significantly diversifying the company; their many role models, including writers like Gabriel García Márquez and Reinaldo Arenas, and musicians like Gloria Estefan and Linda Ronstadt; Llamas' recommendation of "Against All Hope: A Memoir of Life in Castro's Gulag" by Armando Valladares; Díaz-Balart's memories of the 1997 biopic "Selena," about the Tejano singer Selena Quintanilla-Pérez; and Atencio's praise for the panelists' positive influence on her own life and career since arriving in the U.S. ten years ago.
