HULLABALOO {GEORGE HAMILTON; THE SUPREMES} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of musical/variety programs spotlighting pop music performers. This episode begins with the Hullabaloo dancers performing the opening number, and the guest stars are introduced. Host George Hamilton appears and sings “Shall We Dance” with assistance from the Hullabaloo dancers, and then introduces a barbershop quarter from London, fittingly called The Hullabaloos, and they perform “I’m Gonna Love You Too.” Singer Nancy Ames then performs the spiritual “Be Ready” along with the dancers. British comedians Tony Hendra and Nick Ullett take the stage and perform an “amateur” version of Mark Antony’s funereal speech from “Julius Caesar,” made difficult by an uncooperative “corpse.” They then introduce a strange new dance called the “Sludge.” The Supremes then sing “Come See About Me.”

Hamilton introduces the seven eccentric members of the folk group The Back Porch Majority one by one, and they perform “Old Dan Tucker.” Hamilton and Ames then duet on a medley of Hank Williams numbers in honor of Hamilton’s portrayal of Williams in the 1964 film “Your Cheatin’ Heart,” and the songs included are “Hey Good Lookin’”, “I Can’t Help It (If I’m Still in Love With You)” and “Your Cheatin’ Heart.” Next, the Angel Flight all-female drill team from Florida State University take the stage and perform a routine to the Henry Mancini piece “Baby Elephant Walk.” The Supremes then perform a medley of their songs, including “Where Did Our Love Go?”, “When The Lovelight Stars Shining Through His Eyes” and “Baby Love.”

The “Hullabaloo London” segment is shown, featuring host Brian Epstein, who introduces Freddie & the Dreamers for their first appearance on American television, and they sing “I’m Telling You Now,” complete with very peculiar comedic dancing, followed by “I Understand.” After the segment ends, The Hullabaloos perform “Did You Ever,” followed by Hamilton’s rendition of “And I Love Her.” Shirley Ellis then takes the stage for the hit song “The Name Game,” and she brings up Hamilton, Ames, The Supremes, The Hullabaloos and all the other guests to participate with the rhyming song. The program closes with further music and dancing as Hamilton previews upcoming episodes and guests. Includes commercials.
