FLYING NUN, THE: MARCELLO'S IDOL (TV)

Summary

One in this situation comedy series.

Sister Bertrille grows concerned that one of the orphans at the convent, Marcello, does not have a proper father figure, as evidenced by a letter he wrote referring to the nuns as “fellas.” She talks with him and finds out that the only male figure he can think of whom he admires is Carlos, much to her consternation. She visits Carlos and explains the situation to him, and she manages to persuade him to take Marcello on a short sailing trip. When she arrives the next day with Marcello, Carlos is occupied trying to hit on his latest girlfriend Lila; he realizes he completely forgot about his promise to Sister Bertrille. Carlos comes out to greet Marcello, somewhat taken aback by Marcello’s admiration for him. He invites Marcello in and introduces him to Lila, apparently planning to take both of them out sailing. After a time Carlos does not return with Marcello, making the nuns worried. Eventually he does return and relates his experience; Sister Bertrille realizes that Carlos ignored Marcello for virtually the entire trip in favor of Lila, thus defeating its purpose.

Furious, Sister Bertrille visits Carlos again to yell at him for his behavior. She says that he can no longer be Marcello’s “occasional father.” However, Marcello hopes to see Carlos again and expresses a wish that he would adopt him. Sister Bertrille tells him that Carlos would have to be married in order to adopt him, and Marcello goes to visit Carlos personally in order to ask him why he is unmarried. He is somewhat flustered at this question and does not provide Marcello with an answer, although Lila is amused by this. They take their leave as Sister Bertrille goes to pick up Marcello. Marcello comes to the conclusion that Carlos has simply not found the right person yet, and Sister Bertrille posits that perhaps Carlos needs a woman who is “beautiful on the inside.” Marcello resolves to find such a person, and comes to the conclusion that Sister Jacqueline would be suitable. He suggests that she marry Carlos, and Sister Jacqueline declines, quite bemused.

Marcello does not give up, and after Sister Bertrille jokingly suggests that he put an advertisement in the classified section of the newspaper, he sneaks away and speaks to the editor of the local newspaper. He is very much amused by the idea of Marcello attempting to find a wife for Carlos and, although Marcello does not have enough money to place the ad, decides to write a story about it for the front page. He interviews Marcello for the article and prints it. The Reverend Mother is upset when she reads the article and blames Sister Bertrille for everything. She orders Sister Bertrille to take Marcello to Carlos and apologize. Carlos finds out about the article when women start visiting him in an attempt to win his hand in marriage. Angry and flustered, Carlos departs as Sister Bertrille and Marcello arrive; Marcello leaps into his car just before he drives off. They drive into the countryside and Sister Bertrille flies about looking for them. Carlos tries to explain himself to Marcello, and accepts his apology when he realizes what he has done. Sister Bertrille lands beside them and apologizes to Carlos, and he accepts her apology as well. She is pleased to see that Carlos and Marcello have apparently formed a closer relationship due to recent events. Later, Sister Bertrille convinces Marcello to give up on his desire to get adopted by Carlos, pointing out that being a father would irrevocably change his persona. Commercials deleted.
