SURFSIDE 6: INSIDE JOB (TV)

Summary

One in this series of dramas about three young private detectives who work out of a houseboat moored in a Miami Beach marina.

Dave is hired by Arthur Camden, a bank president, to help him foil a potential bank robbery. Leon Huff, Mr. Camden’s chief security officer, has noticed a suspicious man snooping around the bank recently. The man could be the same man who was involved in another bank robbery fourteen years ago. Leon’s son was a teller at the bank and served as the robbers’ inside man before he was murdered by them.

In order to determine the identity of the robbers’ inside man, Dave poses as “Cyril Harris,” a bank clerk at Camden National Bank. On his first day there he meets several tellers, including a young woman named Kathy Murlow, her brother Hal, and another teller named Ted Briller. At first, Dave suspects Ted is the inside man given his recent propensity for expensive dining and partying, but while on a date with Kathy Dave spots Hal on a double-date. Kathy tells him Hal has moved in with Barney Michaels, an old army friend, and she is concerned about him because he has drifted away from the family.

In their apartment, Hal tells Barney he wants to experience Barney’s fancy lifestyle and agrees to be the inside man for their bank heist. Later, Ken comes to visit “Cyril” in his apartment, reporting that he was able to find little information on Barney. While visiting Hal, Dave witnesses another argument between Hal and Kathy. Dave tries to surreptitiously offer Hal a way out of his position as inside man. Barney visits and, alone, Hal indicates that he is reluctant to assist them in their plan.

At the Boom Boom Room, Barney speaks to his boss about Hal’s reluctance. Ken tries to spy on them but they manage to evade him. Ken reports to Dave, who tries to call Hal but gets no answer. He visits Hal in his apartment, only to find him dead on the bathroom floor. Lieutenant Snedigar interrogates Barney, but they have no evidence connecting him to Hal’s death and the autopsy indicates it was an accident.

“Cyril” goes to Barney and threatens to expose him as Hal’s killer unless he is made the new inside man. The robbers take him in, planning to rob the bank during a payroll distribution day. Dave warns Mr. Camden, but there isn’t much time until the heist is scheduled to occur. Daphne visits the bank and almost accidentally blows Dave’s cover. While having lunch at Surfside 6, Dave gets Ken to come help him if needed. Barney spots Dave coming out of Surfside 6 and reports back to his boss, having discovered “Cyril’s” true identity. They move up the robbery to that afternoon.

The robbers kidnap Kathy and will kill her unless Dave lets them into the bank. The robbers arrive in masks and hold up the bank. Mr. Camden comes out of his office with a gun and is shot, but Dave manages to knock one of the robbers out and captures the boss, foiling the heist. The episode ends as Dave and Ken go on a double-date with Kathy and Daphne. Includes commercials.
