CHEERS: LOVE THY NEIGHBOR (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy series about a group of regulars at a Boston bar. Sam is interviewed on the radio by an old sportscaster friend of his. During the interview, Sam makes a joking comment about Diane, referring to her anonymously as one of his many former girlfriends. She is furious at Sam's comments. Meanwhile, Norm's neighbor Phyllis arrives and tells Norm that she suspects her husband of having an affair with his wife Vera. Norm is not convinced, but Phyllis manages to arouse enough suspicion in him that they decide to hire Carla's cousin Santo, a private detective. Diane continues to fume at Sam for his on-air remark. He suggests that he go back on the air and apologize, and Diane approves of the idea. Santo advises Norm and Phyllis against hiring him; he says they may be better off not knowing what their spouses are really up to. They hire him regardless and he sets about his job. Sam reads Diane's scripted apology on air. Despite his stilted reading and her overblown writing style, it works and Diane forgives Sam. Phyllis arrives again and she and Norm wait in the back for Santo to arrive with his report. The two of them are concerned about their marriages and contemplate having an affair with each other to get back at them. Santo enters just as Norm and Phyllis kiss. It turns out that Vera and Phyllis's husband were contemplating having an affair, but decided against it due to their concern for their spouses. Norm and Phyllis are mortified, and Norm realizes how much Vera means to him. Commercials deleted.
