ONE DAY AT A TIME: THE RUNAWAYS {PART 4 OF 4} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of comedies about the lives and struggles of divorcée Ann Romano and her two daughters, Julie and Barbara. Schneider tries to get Ann to exercise to try to release some of her pent-up tension about Julie's departure. Meanwhile, Julie and Chuck stay in a cheap, dirty motel. Chuck, fired from his carwash job due to Dan and Mary's theft of his van, is giving blood to help pay their way. They didn't contact the police about the stolen van for fear that they would call their parents. Julie expresses doubts about whether they were right to run away from home, and soon she and Chuck get into an argument. Soon they start laughing over the absurdity of their situation and Julie decides to call Barbara to get her to send money and other essentials without alerting Ann. However, Barbara insists that she be allowed to tell Ann Julie's location, or she will give them nothing. During the phone conversation, Chuck realizes that his wallet has been stolen and they have no money left. Left with no other option, Julie agrees to Barbara's terms that Ann will deliver their things in person. Ann arrives at the motel and meets with Julie and Chuck. They all sit down to discuss things, and Julie and Chuck continue to try to defend their decision to run away. Julie admits that she isn't happy with her situation. She is prepared to accept Ann's offer to come back home, but only if she gets total control over her own life, and only if she is treated as an adult. Ann declines this offer and walks away. Back at her apartment, the Butterfields arrive to chastise Ann over her decision not to take Julie and Chuck back. She and Barbara defend the decision and drive the Butterfields away. Ann explains to Barbara that allowing Julie free reign over her lifestyle would be too worrisome and dangerous, and muses about her responsibility as a parent. Suddenly Julie and Chuck come in the door, greeted by a stunned Ann and Barbara. Chuck drops her off and heads home; both of them insist that Chuck loves her and has tried to provide for her every step of the way. Julie says that while they still have much to discuss, she can't stand not having Ann in her life. Commercials deleted.
