MACGYVER: LEGEND OF THE HOLY ROSE {PART 1 OF 2} {FIFTH SEASON PREMIERE} (TV)
Summary
One in this action/adventure series about MacGyver, a former Special Forces agent known for his inventive survival skills. In Colombia, MacGyver sneaks into a narcotics cartel camp in order to rescue a reporter named Alexander Shannon, son of United States Senator Tom Shannon. Alexander is being held hostage in the hopes that the United States will exchange prisoners with them. However, Alexander’s leg has been broken by the cartel and their only other means of escape, a helicopter, has flown off and won’t be back for days. Working in concert, MacGyver and Alexander manage to construct a crude aircraft which allows them to safely escape the camp. MacGyver returns to his house boat and asks Pete for some time off. While he sleeps, someone sneaks into the house boat. He awakens the next day to find that the house boat is now adrift in the middle of a bay. A woman pulls up in a boat, identifying herself as Zoe Ryan, an associate professor of archaeology. Zoe grew up in the same neighborhood as MacGyver and remembers him from her childhood; MacGyver recalls her constantly getting into trouble. She set his house adrift to get his attention so she could ask for his help: she claims she is close to discovering the location of the Holy Grail. Zoe takes MacGyver back to her college, where it soon becomes clear that her non-conformist and new-age philosophies clash with the rest of the faculty. When she takes MacGyver to her office, he is knocked down by an unknown assailant, who runs off. Her office has been ransacked. Zoe suspects the assailant was working for Eric Von Leer, a South African precious stone dealer who funded her last expedition. She refused funding when she discovered it originated from him, which caused problems with the dean of her school. MacGyver is fed up with Zoe’s problems and tries to leave, but stops when she reveals a gold plate called “Diana’s Mirror,” created by the 12th-Century alchemist Ambrose. She believes it is crucial in locating the Grail. Von Leer and his men wait outside as the assailant reports to him. He believes Diana’s Mirror could lead to a large cache of valuable rubies. The assailant is killed for his failure to retrieve the mirror and Von Leer drives off. Zoe explains to MacGyver that she wishes to locate the Temple of the Holy Rose, where Ambrose supposedly hid other artifacts of Diana, including the Holy Grail. One of Zoe’s fellow professors, a man named Wycliff, elaborates further: Ambrose constructed the temple to protect the artifacts from destruction by the Church. Legend says that Ambrose constructed three artifacts which in concert would reveal the location of the temple: Diana’s Mirror, the Scepter of the Triple Deity, and the Holy Rose. Von Leer funded Zoe’s expedition in the hopes of obtaining the artifacts himself and making a fortune. The next artifact, the Scepter, is located in London. Zoe believes that MacGyver’s way of thinking is not unlike Ambrose’s, and thus he would be invaluable in uncovering the artifacts. Zoe and MacGyver arrive in London and immediately seek out the Scepter. Von Leer’s men learn of their arrival and prepare a trap for them. They find the abbey where the Scepter is being held; an exhibit on medieval tortures is on display. The lady running the display allows them ingress. Once inside, MacGyver realizes the inscription on Diana’s Mirror comes from a baptism prayer and they realize the Scepter is hidden in the abbey’s baptismal font. They use the mirror to reveal the Scepter, actually three distinct scepters. However, Von Leer and his men appear, cornering Zoe and MacGyver. He plans to capture Zoe to help them obtain the remaining artifacts and kill MacGyver. Zoe threatens to destroy the scepters if they harm MacGyver. Von Leer captures Zoe and shackles MacGyver to a sarcophagus while a pendulum blade slowly descends, threatening to slice MacGyver in half. Includes commercials and an “ABC News Brief.”
