DOOGIE HOWSER, M.D.: DOOGENSTEIN {SECOND SEASON PREMIERE} (TV)
Summary
The second season premiere in this comedy series about teenage genius Doogie Howser, M.D., the youngest doctor in the country, who attempts to live his life as a normal adolescent. In this episode, Doogie is having recurring Frankenstein-themed nightmares about creating a monster that is identical to him. He meets with a psychologist, who asks about his life, habits and friends. He mention that, when talking about their impending college careers, his friends seem more excited about partying than studying, and his therapist suggests that he is jealous of their normal adolescence and open-ended futures. The doctor asks about his recent seventeenth birthday, and Doogie explains how he and Vinnie successfully “86’d the old folks” from his pool party in order to be carefree and ogle the girls in their bikinis. However, Doogie is summoned to the hospital just as the party begins. As Doogie tends to a teenager, Michael, who has fallen off his motorcycle, the boy's father, Philip, goes into a tirade about his son riding such a dangerous vehicle. Doogie’s shrink asks if he resents his career preventing him from having fun, but he argues that saving the man’s life was paramount. Just then, he is paged by the hospital, and when he arrives, he learns that Philip has died.
Doogie has the dream again and realizes that “being a doctor is the monster” and is holding him back. Vinnie shows a video of Doogie’s party, at which he served as the “surrogate” birthday boy, and Doogie realizes that while there will be lots of time to practice medicine, his youth is slipping away. Doogie ponders taking a leave of absence from the hospital, but when he goes to meet with Dr. Canfield, he runs into Michael, who thanks the young doctor for everything he did for his father, saying they bonded again before the man’s death, and Doogie reconsiders. When he returns home, he finds that his friends have thrown him a surprise second birthday party, and Vinnie apologizes for hijacking the first one. Later, Doogie recounts in his journal how he had the dream again, but “defeated” the monster by remembering to make time for fun as well as work. Includes commercials.
