DOLLY PARTON: CHRISTMAS AT HOME (TV)

Summary

This televised musical special features Dolly Parton celebrating Christmas with her family and friends in her home state of Tennessee. The program begins as Parton explores a Christmas shop, explaining that she recorded her holiday album in the middle of July in a festively-decorated studio. She sings "I'll Be Home For Christmas" and finishes up her shopping, then returning to her family home and greeting her relatives. They sing "Deck the Halls," and Parton reflects on a deceased family friend before singing "We Three Kings." The children bake cookies and other treats in the kitchen, and everyone sings "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer." Parton's parents then tell the story of their traditional gift of candied cherries to one another, started fifty-one years ago when they were first married. Parton's eleven siblings reminisce about their childhood and tell stories about her, and she sings "O Little Town of Bethlehem."

Next, the kids take a hay ride and sing "Jingle Bells," ending up at a nursing home, where they visit with the residents and deliver their Christmas cookies. Parton's "hillbilly friend" Ellwood from Dollywood introduces a song, "Ring Them Bells," played by the nursing home's band. The group then heads for the carousel at Dollywood and Parton sings "Santa Claus is Comin' to Town," and St. Nick himself shows up to chat with her. She explains that her Christmas wishes are the same as ever, and explores a number of shops and craft booths, discussing the traditions of meaningful, homemade gifts. She and the others sing "Little Drummer Boy" and assemble a nativity scene, then heading to a Christmas Mass, where Parton sings "Joy to the World," "The First Noel" and "Go Tell It on the Mountain," accompanied by a gospel choir. The evening closes as everyone processes out of the church while singing "Silent Night." Includes commercials and promos.
