KNOTS LANDING: RISE AND FALL (TV)
Summary
One in this night-time drama serial, spun off from the series "Dallas," about the residents of the small southern California community of Knots Landing. In this episode, Cathy performs on her TV show as an unstable Joshua roams the streets. Val, returning from her honeymoon, is dismayed to learn from Karen that Joshua broke into Cathy's home to scare her, and she declares that he is dangerous. Greg argues with Coblenz about Frank Elliot's supposedly accidental death, disturbed by how little he seems to care and suspecting that he had a hand on it. Gary learns that Frank called him shortly before his death, needing urgently to speak to him. Elsewhere, Joshua continues obsessing over Cathy, and decides that they can be reunited only in death. Gary and Abby talk with the Elliots and learn that Frank was "dissatisfied" with the goings-on at Empire Valley, also revealing that they have received an exceptionally large insurance payout for his death. Val and Lilimae spot Joshua preaching on the street, but Val refuses to allow him to come home with them, saying she is afraid for her children. She tells Karen that he has gotten worse, and Karen resolves to help her.
Mack and Gary discuss Frank again, with Gary wondering about the true source of the overlarge payout. Mack confirms that he is investigating the death but asks Gary not to tell anyone, particularly Abby, and Gary is annoyed at his mistrust of her. Lilimae searches for Joshua and intervenes when he nearly gets into a fight with some men on the street, and he happily tells her that he has had a "revelation." Greg tells Abby about his suspicions regarding Coblenz's involvement in Frank's death, though she maintains that it was an accident. Greg is further frustrated to learn that Gary and Mack have gotten involved as well. Mack and Karen talk with Val and her mother about Joshua, point out that he is violent and needs help, but Lilimae refuses to have him committed, saying that she can care for him. After a performance, Cathy talks with Ben about her recent troubles and thanks him for his support. As she drives home alone, Joshua appears in the backseat and holds her at knifepoint.
Laura immediately suspects Joshua when she realizes that Cathy is missing, and Lilimae goes in search of her son. On a rooftop, Joshua rambles about being "possessed" by a strong hatred for his loved ones, then declaring that he and Cathy must die together. He attempts to jump off the building with her, but Lilimae arrives and stops him, berating him for his cruelty and telling him that she is no longer his mother. As she advances, Joshua steps backward off the edge of the building and plummets to his death, much to the women's shock and horror. Commercials deleted.
