FORTY-EIGHT HOURS {48 HOURS}: KIDNAPPED {SIXTH SEASON PREMIERE} (TV)
Summary
The sixth season premiere of this news documentary program, hosted by Dan Rather, which follows 48 hours in the life of a particular news story or subject. This episode's topic is kidnapping; the program follows five separate kidnapping cases, exploring the kidnappers' motives and the crime's effects on its victims and their families. In "What Happened to Haley: Part One," reporter Wyatt Anderson covers the story of an infant purportedly kidnapped from the truck her father was driving; as the case develops, the father becomes the prime suspect in the crime. For the next segment, "The Fugitive," Erin Moriarty joins a manhunt in the Southwest for a convicted kidnapper and bank robber who has kidnapped again in order to escape capture; Moriarty talks to tourists held captive by him during his flight and the law enforcement officials seeking his capture. Next, Phil Jones reports from Minnesota on "Jacob's Hope," the ongoing search for a boy three years after he was abducted by a stranger; Jones visits with Jacob's family, still hoping for his return. The next segment, "Wanted: Part One," focuses on a kidnapping perpetrated by a child's parent; Bernard Goldberg follows a father to his reunion with his recently located son. The next segment of the program, "Patty's Story," looks back at the kidnapping of Patty Hearst in 1974; Rather talks to Hearst about her experiences as a hostage who participated in -- and was jailed for -- crimes with her captors, the Symbionese Liberation Army. In "Baby Kerri," Moriarty investigates the kidnapping of a newborn child by a stranger and visits the infant's family as the investigation into her disappearance progresses.
The program continues with "What Happened to Haley: Part Two," where Wyatt Anderson follows up on the alleged kidnapping of baby Haley. In "Rush to Judgment," Richard Schlesinger reviews the "Crime of the Century" kidnapping of Charles Lindbergh, Jr. in 1932 and talks to two men who still debate the guilt of Bruno Richard Haupmann, who was convicted of the crime. For the final segment of the program, "Wanted: Part 2," Goldberg returns to Idaho Falls, Idaho to visit with Robert, the nine-year-old adjusting to life with his father Tom and his new family after a five-year absence. Includes commercials and promos. This program is closed-captioned.
