Summary
This program presents a portion of coverage of the 1994 XVII Olympic Winter Games from Lillehammer. Highlights of this portion include coverage of the following events and topics: Anchor sports commentator Pat O’Brien presides throughout this portion and introduces segments and highlights of various sports and stories. O’Brien introduces a segment called “Northern Light” profiling Dan Jansen (USA) and his Olympic history and performance at the 500-meter men’s speed skating race. Sports commentator James Brown offers a retrospective on the luge, and profiles luger Duncan Kennedy (USA) and his disappointing high-speed crash during the luge runs. Sports commentator Bill Geist interviews people on the street in Lillehammer about the romantic practices of the Norwegian people, in honor of Valentine’s Day. O’Brien introduces a segment entitled “Information Highway” about rumors surrounding several Olympic athletes’ romantic lives, including skier Megan Gerety (USA), luger Cammy Myler (USA), luger Jonathan Edwards (USA), skier Jean-Luc Brassard (Canada), figure skater Isabelle Brasseur (Canada), skier Fuzz Feddersen (USA), figure skater Jenni Meno (USA), and figure skater Todd Sand (USA). O’Brien interviews business magnate Donald Trump and his wife Marla Maples from the Plaza Hotel in New York City. O’Brien then interviews supermodel Vendela in the studio. They discuss her Norwegian roots; her favorite moments from the Olympic games; and her recent appearance on the cover of “Sports Illustrated.” A segment highlighting skier Donna Weinbrecht (USA) is presented, profiling her skiing career and recovery from a serious injury from the previous year. Sports commentator Jim Gray reports from the Storgata in downtown Lillehammer on the Norwegian candy on display at a local convenience store. O’Brien reads letters sent to him by a young student as part of an educational program. Sports commentator Andrea Joyce reports from the Morkved Primary School in Lillehammer on a “mini-Olympics” held for the schoolchildren there. O’Brien offers closing thoughts and updates the medal count for the games so far.
