Summary

This program presents a portion of coverage of the 1994 XVII Olympic Winter Games from Lillehammer. Highlights of this portion include coverage of the following events and topics: Anchor sports commentator Greg Gumbel presides throughout this portion and introduces segments and highlights from the figure skating special performances and the women’s slalom. Sports commentators Verne Lundquist, Scott Hamilton, and Tracy Wilson report from the Northern Lights Hall in Hamar on a special exhibition of figure skating by this year’s participating athletes. First up is Viktor Petrenko (Ukraine), with a performance set to the music of the Gipsy Kings. Afterwards, ice dancers Susanna Rahkamo (Finland) and Petri Kokko (Finland) perform a routine set to the music of Tchaikovsky. Lundquist, Hamilton, and Wilson comment on a performance by Surya Bonaly (France) set to music from “The Meadow Robin.” Philippe Candeloro (France) skates next, performing to music from the “Rocky” film series. Retired general H. Norman Schwarzkopf reports from the Norway-Russia border about its significance during the Cold War, the problems faced by the Norwegian Border Commission, current Norwegian relations with Russia, and the significance of the border-town Kirkenes during World War II. Sports commentators Tim Ryan, Christin Cooper, and Hank Kashiwa report from Hafjell on the women’s slalom event. First to ski is Vreni Schneider (Switzerland), who finishes her first run with a time of 59.68. Next to ski is Pernilla Wiberg (Sweden), who finishes her run with a time of 59.05. Ryan and Cooper offer commentary as Elfi Eder (Austria) makes her run, finishing with a time of 59.54. Gabi Zingre (Switzerland) makes her run next, finishing with a time of 59.62. Ryan and Cooper comment as Annelise Coberger (New Zealand) makes her first slalom run. She falls at the top of the hill, disqualifying her from competition. Sports commentator Billy Kidd reports about the difficulty and hazards of the course at Hafjell. Kashiwa offers commentary on the recent changes in ski boot technology. Ryan and Cooper comment as Anita Wachter (Austria) makes her first slalom run. She misses a gate and is unable to continue the race, resulting in disqualification. Julie Parisien (USA) makes her run next, finishing with a time of 1:01.61. Next, Katja Koren (Slovenia) makes her first slalom run, finishing with a time of 59.00, putting her in the lead. Sports commentator Mark Phillips reports on skier Alberto Tomba (Italy) and his flamboyant lifestyle and personality. Ryan and Cooper offer commentary on the second runs of the women’s slalom. First up is Spela Pretnar (Slovenia), who finishes with a total time of 1:58.65. Christine von Gruenigen (Switzerland) makes her second run next, finishing with a total time of 1:57.86. Schneider makes her second run, finishing with a total time of 1:56.01, putting her well in the lead. Ryan and Cooper offer commentary as Zingre makes her second run, finishing with a total time of 1:57.80. Eder makes her second run next, finishing with a total time of 1:56.35, putting her just behind Schneider. Wiberg makes her second run, finishing with a total time of 1:56.68. Ryan and Cooper offer commentary as Koren makes her second slalom run, finishing with a total time of 1:56.61. The final results for the women’s slalom event are: Vreni Schneider (Switzerland) wins the gold medal with a time of 1:56.01; Elfi Eder (Austria) wins the silver medal with a time of 1:56.35; and Katja Koren (Slovenia) wins the bronze medal with a time of 1:56.61. Schneider is interviewed about her victory. Footage of Parisien is shown; she is disqualified during her second run for missing a gate.
