ANNIE OAKLEY: ANNIE GETS HER MAN (TV)
Summary
One in this Western adventure series loosely based on the real life of famous sharpshooter Annie Oakley.
In this episode, Trem Barton and his band of outlaws plan to rob the bank while the sheriff and deputy are away, deciding to use the hotheaded Chet Sterling to distract Annie. In town, Annie sends Lofty off to meet her Uncle Luke while out in the street, Chet causes a disturbance by firing his gun. He frightens Pots Webber's horses, and Annie disarms him before chasing after the carriage, and the crooks take the opportunity to rob the bank. Tagg, however, spots them, and he follows them to their hideout, after which he finds Annie and tells her what happened. Chet's Uncle Frank, who is the bank president, lectures him about his behavior, and when Chet retorts that he will leave as soon as he comes into his inheritance, Frank informs him that he may have lost his money in the robbery. Chet threatens to kill him, but Annie intervenes and orders him to behave. Frank and Annie talk as Chet meets Tagg, who is impressed by him, though Annie proves herself to be the better shooter once again, and Chet is slightly humbled. Annie cautions Tagg to stay away from the troublemaker, and they both notice Barton entering the bank for a second time that day. They decide to search his home while he is busy.
In the bank, Barton meets with Frank, who reveals himself to be in on the robbery. Barton explains where he hid the money in his home, and Frank discusses his plan to convince Chet that his inheritance is gone. Out in the desert, Tagg unshoes his horse and distracts Barton's henchmen while Annie searches the house. She finds sooty fingerprints and realizes the money is hidden amongst the coal, but no sooner does she recover it that Barton returns home. She hides and, while he shaves, puts markings on the bullets in his holster and pistol. When Barton discovers that the money is gone, he assumes Frank is guilty and confronts him, eventually shooting him dead. Chet enters, and Barton knocks him out and frames him for the murder before leaving, making it look as though he recently fired his gun. Annie arrives, followed by Lofty, and Chet looks guilty, though Lofty is interrupted by Barton's sudden arrival before he can check Chet's gun. Barton "accidentally" fires Chet's gun, thus making it impossible to check if the barrel was clean, but Annie helps Chet escape and then explains how Barton set him up, using the marked bullets to prove it. However, Barton disarms both Annie and Lofty, taking them back to the sheriff's office, where Tagg is guarding the money, and threatens to kill all three of them. Chet returns just in time to save the day, and Annie shoots Barton, later conceding that Tagg was right and Chet is a "good guy" after all. Commercials deleted.
