SOUL {LOU RAWLS, MARTHA AND THE VANDELLAS, NIPSEY RUSSELL, REDD FOXX} (TV)

Summary

This televised special features performances of soul music interspersed with comedy bits. The program begins as Joe Tex performs "Show Me (A Man That's Got A Good Woman)", after which Nipsey Russell and Lou Rawls banter and then perform "Tell It Like It Is." After a series of jokes from a number of pairs, Lou Rawls performs "In the Evening," followed by more comedy. Next, Hines, Hines and Dad perform "The Beat Goes On" and Rawls does "Movin' On Up," followed by a series of comedy bits including an interview with the first black Vice-President, an installment of "Meet the Press," a prison scene, and an encounter with Rapunzel. The Chambers Brothers sing "I Can't Stand It," and Redd Foxx offers up his opinions of the Klu Klux Klan, followed by a series of race-related jokes. The Soul Sisters then perform "Tell Mama," and the guests describe their definitions of "soul." After another dance number, Martha Reeves and the Vandellas perform "Down by the Riverside," which is then followed by short skits at a shoeshine station, a barber's store and in a trench in the Vietnam War. Joe Tex performs "Skinny Legs And All," and all of the guests convene onstage for a number parodying Broadway songs in a soul style, including "Ascot Gavotte," "Show Me" and "I Could Have Danced All Night" from "My Fair Lady."
