TONIGHT SHOW STARRING JOHNNY CARSON, THE {TOM SELLECK, PAM MATTESON, ROBERT PALMER} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of late-night talk/variety programs hosted by Johnny Carson. His guests for this program are actor Tom Selleck, comedian Pam Matteson, and musician Robert Palmer.

In his opening monologue, Carson touches on the following topics, among others: NBC's all-important Thursday night comedy lineup; his uncannily similar outfit to famously bland bandleader Tommy Newsom; ideas for a sequel to the action film "Cobra" (1986); the arrival of California's "rattlesnake season"; Bob Hope's son Tony's bid for a California Congressional seat; C-SPAN's plans to air live footage of goings-on in the Senate; and DC Comics' plans for significant changes to the character of Superman. Next, Carson reads out some highly unusual and specific phobias, and then conducts an audience poll in which his guests vote by applause on topics including TV commercials, reading habits, education, and others.

Selleck then takes the stage and discusses receiving the "John Wayne Award," named for Selleck's famous University of Southern California alumnus, from his Sigma Chi fraternity; secret handshakes and in-jokes from Greek life; his sex-symbol status and some female fans' extreme attempts to meet him; why he still enjoys working on "Magnum, P.I.," which has just concluded its sixth season; his iconic and highly recognizable mustache; and the story of how he came to share a dance with Princess Diana at the White House, in part to prevent "rumors" about her and John Travolta.

Matteson then performs a partially musical stand-up routine in which she jokes about her Brooklyn roots and how women from New York City and Los Angeles differ; her loud, opinionated mother; and mother-daughter music debates while riding in the car, with references to the music of Julie Andrews and Cyndi Lauper.

Finally, Palmer performs "Addicted to Love" and "Hyperactive" from his new album "Riptide." Includes commercials and promos.
