SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE {KYLE MACLACHLAN, SINEAD O'CONNOR} {SIXTEENTH SEASON PREMIERE} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of live, late-night comedy/variety programs featuring topical satire. Actor Kyle MacLachlan hosts this program, with musical guest Sinéad O'Connor. In the opening sequence, President Bush addresses a fiery speech to the Iraqi people about the dangers of their leader Saddam Hussein, employing a dizzying array of animal metaphors, after which Hussein himself and some critics analyze the speech, deeming it an effective improvement over his past attempts. During his opening monologue, MacLachlan answers some questions from the audience about himself and his show "Twin Peaks," including an answer to the infamous question "who killed Laura Palmer?" He then receives a phone call from a very angry David Lynch, however, and quickly redacts the spoiler.
Sketches include the following: a commercial for "Bad Idea" jeans; an episode of the German cultural program "Sprockets," hosted by the eccentric Dieter and featuring a contest entitled "Germany's Most Disturbing Home Videos," in which the most bizarre home movie is rewarded with a prize and some odd dancing; a parody installment of "Twin Peaks," in which MacLachlan's Agent Dale Cooper refuses to accept that Laura Palmer's killer has been found, despite repeated confessions and hard evidence, given his desire to "look beyond the obvious"; and "Weekend Update," with Dennis Miller discussing President Bush's latest antics, the high cost of the bailout, a live report from Saudi Arabia with a delirious and sunburnt Al Franken, who soon falls victim to the heat; other recent political events, the MPAA's creation of the "NC-17" rating, and Leona Helmsley's strongly-worded open letter to Saddam Hussein. Sinéad O'Connor also performs "Three Babies."
Other highlights include the following: a party thrown by Atlantic Records for their new rap act 2 Live Crew, during which several nerdy guests offer their ideas for outrageous, vulgar new songs to the perplexed frontman; a day at the novelty store "All Things Scottish," run by a squabbling, kilt-wearing father-son team; an evening at the Turf Club with an aging Frank Sinatra offering career advice to George Michael, who is more concerned about the quality of his best physical attribute; and an evening around the campfire featuring cowboys singing a disturbing song about the demise of their "little dogies" in a meat processing plant. O'Connor also performs "The Last Day of Our Acquaintance." Includes commercials and promos.
