GOMER PYLE, USMC: ARRIVEDERCI, GOMER (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy series about the misadventures of guileless Southern Marine Corps Private Gomer Pyle. In this episode, Gomer happily prepares to accompany his friend Frankie Lombardi home for the weekend, unaware that the hot-tempered Italian-American family is in the midst of a heated argument about Frankie's sister Rosa, who has still not "made it official" with her boyfriend Leo. They attempt to put the debate aside when Frankie arrives with Gomer, who immediately charms the family with his friendly manner, but Mama Lombardi privately urges Frankie to give Leo "a push" when he arrives for dinner. During the meal, Frankie drops hints about the advantages of settling down with a family, though Gomer unwittingly contradicts him and makes things worse. Frankie tries to clue Gomer in to the plan, but Leo quickly departs, leaving Mama and Papa frustrated. When they overhear Gomer singing an Italian love song as Rosa plays the piano, however, Mama sets her sights on a new potential son-in-law.

Gomer is baffled when the Lombardis invite Uncle Julio over to meet him and begin treating him like "one of the family," and Frankie and Rosa apologetically explain that their well-meaning parents are simply desperate to ensnare a worthy young bachelor. Frankie decides to "scare" Leo into action by pretending that Rosa and Gomer have truly hit it off, but Leo sees through their would-be casual comments and angrily declares that he does not wish to be "pressured." Later, Frankie and Gomer find themselves unintentionally locked out of the Lombardi home, and when Leo spots Gomer putting a ladder up to Rosa's window, he misunderstands and hotly declares that he alone is Rosa's true beau. Mama and Papa panic when the "burglars" crawl through the window, but Leo then announces that he has "come for Rosa" and intends to marry her after all, having been inspired by Frankie's trick – but Mama then dissolves into tears at the idea of losing her "baby." Later, Gomer cheerily assures the family that he does not mind "losing" Rosa to her fiancé – but Mama then introduces cousin Gina, who is also single. Includes commercials.
