SABRINA, THE TEENAGE WITCH: THE CRUCIBLE {3-D VERSION} (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy series about a teenage witch named Sabrina who lives with her two aunts, who are also witches, and their talking cat, Salem. Sabrina’s class is going on a field trip to Salem, Massachusetts, where they will be given period clothing and be re-enacting the Salem Witch Trials. Sabrina is uncomfortable with the idea and doesn’t want to go. Meanwhile, Libby has her eye on Adam, a member of the school baseball team. She wants to ask him out on the Salem trip. Hilda and Zelda convince Sabrina to go on the Salem trip, assuring her that the Salem Witch Trials didn’t involve real witches and that she has nothing to worry about. Once the class arrives in Salem, they are given “role cards” that they are to assume; they are told that one or more of these cards have “witch” written on them. Sabrina doesn’t bother to look at her card, while Jenny throws her “townsperson” card away. Everyone is forced to pick a “buddy” for the trip; Libby tries to buddy up with Adam but he has already chosen Jenny as her buddy, provoking Libby’s ire. Everyone dons period costume and works on “chores” as part of the field trip. While at lunch, Jenny goes off alone with Adam to talk in private. Libby, jealous, concocts spectral evidence against Jenny, accusing her of being a witch. Libby works the other “townsfolk” up into frenzy, instigating a trial against Jenny. Sabrina is concerned about Jenny, projecting her own insecurities about her witch status onto her. At the trial, Libby and her friends concoct more spectral evidence against Jenny. When she refuses to reveal what she and Adam were discussing, she is placed in the stocks. Adam returns and tries to straighten everything out: he revealed to her that he was planning on quitting the baseball team to focus on academics. Libby takes this as proof that Adam was “bewitched.” Sabrina tries to bring everyone to their senses but this only gets her accused of witchcraft by Libby as well. When Sabrina argues with her, she loses control for a moment and magically throws a fireball at Libby. Sabrina is called to trial, scheduled for the next day. Panicked, she calls her aunts to pick her up. When they arrive, Sabrina explains that she was made uncomfortable by the rampant anti-witch sentiments she was surrounded with, making her feel insecure. Hilda and Zelda declare that Sabrina has a lesson about accepting herself to learn from all this and leave her in Salem. At her trial, Sabrina confesses to being a witch. Harvey tries to stand up for her, but she tries to explain that witches are stereotyped and that narrow-minded individuals prevent them from interacting with human beings (speaking about “real” witches instead of the ones from Salem’s trials). The “townsfolk” find Jenny guilty of witchcraft, but Sabrina is declared innocent. When Libby demands that Jenny be punished, Sabrina uses her magic to mess with Libby. This prompts Libby to admit that she fabricated evidence against Jenny, earning her time in the stocks. As the bus pulls up, it is revealed that the field trip was not about 17th-Century Salem, but about human nature. It is explained that there were no “witch” cards; that the accusations were made entirely by the students themselves. On the bus, Sabrina finds her card, but to her surprise it reads “witch.” Includes commercials.
