HAPPY DAYS: WELCOME HOME {PART 2 OF 2} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of comedies about life in the 1950s. In this episode, Richie returns home from another day at The Milwaukee Journal, nonplussed about his new career. He’s annoyed when Lori Beth asks him about a possible house to rent. The last straw is when, after sitting down to dinner with the family, his mother won’t allow him to have soda pop with dinner. Richie snaps at the group, then tries to explain his grumpy behavior to Richie Jr. Soon, after a victorious softball game, Richie is presented with the game ball for his great play. Afterward, Potsie asks Richie to quit the team; Richie’s participation has gotten Potsie benched. Later, Richie asks the seemingly happy Roger if he is doing all he wants to do with his life. Roger tells him how he tried and failed to be a basketball star, but has the satisfaction of at least having made the attempt. Trying to cheer Richie up, Marion challenges her son to a game of hoops. If she wins, he’ll have to shave off his new moustache, which she hates. At first, Richie opts to give in, then decides not to be a wimp. Soon, everyone is noticing how surly and frustrated Richie has become. Lori Beth has no idea what to do, seeking Joanie’s counsel. Richie goes to have a few beers and doesn’t even want to speak to Fonz, feeling like being alone. Fonz tries to talk Richie into going home and Richie takes a swing at him. Richie realizes that he is going crazy, pretending he is happy, living his life for everybody else. Soon, Fonz has allayed some of Richie’s fears and Richie has decided to finally head for California, with Lori Beth stating that she’ll support his dreams. Richie is scared to tell his parents but eventually goes through with it. Surprisingly, Howard even gives Richie a little money to get him started. Fonz hooks Richie up with first-class tickets to Tinseltown. Richie and Fonz discuss their great friendship. Richie then says his goodbyes to a tearful family and Fonz. Later, at Arnold’s, Potsie’s continued attempts to break the depressed Fonzie’s funk start to work. Commercials deleted.
