HAPPY DAYS: WELCOME HOME: PART 1 (TV)
Summary
One in this series of comedies about life in the 1950s. In this episode, a pregnant Lori Beth returns to the Cunningham home with Little Richie. She’s quickly followed by Ralph, who’s back after getting discharged from the army three months early. Richie then makes a surprise appearance, to his family’s delight. Howard wants to get Richie a job interview with The Milwaukee Journal, but Richie doesn’t seem so sure if that’s his dream any more. Later, at a reunion at Arnold’s, Potsie greets his two old pals with open arms. Then, Roger and Chachi appear and soon everyone is catching up and belting out “Blueberry Hill.” Chachi tells Richie how Joanie recently dumped him. Later, with the party heating up, Richie and Ralph discuss their civilian plans. Privately, Richie tells Fonz at a pool hall that he wants to move his family to California so he can write movies. Fonz is slightly hurt that Richie wants to leave Milwaukee, and many of those he loves. Then, Fonz tries to stop a rogue’s unwanted advancements on a lady and, after the man pulls a knife, Richie takes over and uses his army training to stop the fellow. Later, Howard tells Richie that he has been hired as a staff reporter and starts work on Monday morning, forcing Richie to reveal that he is no longer interested in journalism. When his parents are surprised at his “half-baked pipe dream”, Richie lashes out. That night, Howard and Marion discuss the practicality of Richie’s dream with him, eventually convincing him to take the newspaper job. A bummed-out Richie is forced to tell Ralph how he has ditched his Hollywood dreams. Once alone, Richie angrily throws away his screenplay. Commercials deleted.
