DICK VAN DYKE SHOW, THE: THE SQUARE TRIANGLE (TV)
Summary
One in this series of comedy programs about the personal and professional life of Rob Petrie, the head comedy writer for television's "Alan Brady Show." In this episode, Rob, Sally and Buddy wait for news of that week's show, unable to write their introduction until they learn the identity of the guest star. Mel then informs them that Brady will be joined by French heartthrob Jacques Savon, and Rob nervously admits to Sally and Buddy that he met the celebrity some years ago while vacationing in Europe with Laura – and unwittingly caused the breakup of Jacques' marriage when Jacques' wife Yvette declared that she had fallen for Rob. Rob hides when Jacques arrives, though Jacques spots his old "friend's" name on the door and notes that he wishes to speak with him.
Back at home, Laura learns of Jacques' appearance on the show and, unaware of Rob's confession, nervously confides to Millie that she was in fact the one to break up the marriage, having unintentionally stolen Jacques' heart during their trip. Millie spills the beans to Sally, and the two encourage Laura to tell Rob the truth, but the Petries, both believing themselves guilty of unintentional philandering, cannot bring themselves to 'fess up. At the office, Buddy and Sally tell Jacques of the Petries' misconceptions, and he assures them that he and Yvette split because of "mutual hatred," admitting that they both often flirted with other people during the marriage. He wonders if he should confess the truth or allow the Petries to maintain their memories of "forbidden love" in Europe, and when Rob and Laura arrive, he attempts to explain, in a roundabout way, that true love, like that which they share, cannot be "pulled asunder" by any third party. Rob and Laura, however, fail to catch his meaning and nervously decline his dinner invitation, still believing themselves to be homewreckers. Commercials deleted.
