SABRINA, THE TEENAGE WITCH: MOM VS. MAGIC {SECOND SEASON FINALE} (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy series about a teenage witch named Sabrina who lives with her two aunts, who are also witches, and their talking cat, Salem.
Salem’s mother is coming to visit him for mother’s day, and he is nervous because he never told her that he was turned into a cat and she is notoriously domineering. His dilemma reminds Sabrina that she cannot see her mother, lest she be transformed into a ball of wax. Hilda and Zelda get the idea to visit their mother for mother’s day as well. They find Sabrina with Dashiell in the closet, returning from their date. They kiss before he leaves.
The next day Harvey asks Sabrina’s advice about getting his mother a present for mother’s day. He asks her to go shopping with him for presents. As Hilda and Zelda prepare to leave to visit their mother, Hilda expresses her belief that Zelda was always the favored child. Dashiell shows up at Sabrina’s school to try to get her to play hooky, but she decides to keep her promise to Harvey and hastily covers up Dashiell’s presence.
Salem’s mother arrives and he reveals to her that he is now a cat. Rather than be upset, she finds Salem adorable as a cat. Sabrina and Harvey return to her house, having found nothing suitable for Harvey’s mother. Dashiell appears in her house and Sabrina tries to get Harvey out of there. During all of this, Harvey asks her to go steady with him again. Despite her efforts, the two boys encounter one another and Sabrina is forced to introduce them to each other. She tries to smooth over the situation, but they insist that she choose which of them to go out with.
Hilda and Zelda find their mother isn’t home for some reason. Sabrina attempts to magically send a letter to her mother, but the Quizmaster appears to tell her that she is not permitted to do so until she receives her witches’ license and that the Witches’ Council is furious. She is offered an ultimatum: she can either choose to relinquish her magic or she will never be able to see her mother again. She has twelve hours to decide.
While pondering her decision, Harvey approaches her again for gift ideas for his mother. She uses magic to produce a shepherdess figurine, which turns out to be an item that Harvey’s mother has sought for years. Dashiell appears to try to sway Sabrina’s decision, but she has too much on her mind and leaves. Sabrina sees Salem sharing quality time with his mother and it makes her realize how much she misses her own mother. Salem and his mother soon discover that she is allergic to him.
Sabrina summons the Quizmaster and announces her decision: she gives up her magic in exchange for being able to see her mother. He teleports her there and Sabrina shares a heartfelt reunion with her mother. While Hilda and Zelda look through their mother’s house, adorned with Zelda’s various trophies, they stumble across a crude clay horse, the first thing Hilda produced with her magic. Hilda begins to think that perhaps their mother does appreciate her. However, they receive a call from their mother, who is spending the day with their sister Vesta. This makes the truth apparent to them: their mother’s favorite child was Vesta after all.
Sabrina and her mother have a talk with each other. She tells Sabrina that all decisions have “good parts and bad parts.” As for Sabrina’s decision about Harvey and Dashiell, her mother tells her to “follow [her] heart.” Salem’s mother goes to the doctor for allergy treatment. Sabrina returns from her long journey to find the Quizmaster waiting for her, who tells her it was all a test to see if there was anything more important to her than magic. Having passed the test, Sabrina’s powers are returned to her. The episode ends as she is left to contemplate whether to choose Harvey or Dashiell. Includes commercials.
