CAROL BURNETT SHOW, THE {PETULA CLARK, JOHN BYNER} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of comedy/variety programs starring Carol Burnett. This program features special guests John Byner and Petula Clark.
The episode begins as Burnett takes the stage and chats with the audience, discussing the following: her early role alongside Buddy Hackett; a recent amusing compliment from "The Rat Patrol" star Christopher George; and her three young daughters.
Clark sings "I Can't Remember (How It Was Before)", and Byner takes the stage to perform some of his impressions, including a couple of odd animals and individuals such as David Brinkley, John Wayne, Ed Sullivan, Jimmy Stewart and "Tonto." In an installment of "The Old Folks," Molly and Bert banter as they prepare for a garage sale, and Molly sings "You're My Reason" to her spouse.
A "salute" to TV commercials features a cigarette ad, a married couple torn apart by truly terrible coffee, a woman's desperation for a "MacDougal's" hamburger and fries, a greeting from "Rational Airlines," and one housewife's extreme love for her Tidey laundry detergent. Next, two bumbling crooks attempt to kidnap a wealthy banker's daughter and end up with a chatty Fireside Girl instead; she cheerfully annoys the pair as her father demands $10,000 to take her back. "The culture station" then features a spot on modern art, examining the impoverished Parisian lives of a painter, Laurence, and his long-suffering wife Claudia. A famous art dealer stops by their apartment, though Laurence tosses him out when he offers only 600 francs for a painting; a desperate Claudia attempts to "86 herself" — and when she tumbles out of the window, Laurence finally gets the inspiration for the very strange faces featured in his works.
Next, Mr. Compost is ordered by his boss, Mr. Bigwig, to fire a veteran acting legend, Donald Duck himself, as "kids don't like ducks" anymore. Donald tries to remind Mr. Compost of their long artistic history together, but Mr. Compost is unable to find a solution — until his wife calls and asks him to bring something home for dinner. Finally, Clark tells Burnett about her new five-month-old son, and the two sing "Turn Around" and "God Bless the Child." Burnett then closes the show by singing her signature good-night song and adding Clark’s and Byner's autographs to her guest book. Commercials deleted.
