CAROL BURNETT SHOW, THE {GLORIA SWANSON} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of comedy/variety programs starring Carol Burnett. This program features special guest Gloria Swanson.
The episode begins as Burnett takes the stage and chats with the audience, discussing the following: an amusing story from the set of her film "Pete 'n' Tillie" (1972); Swanson's approval of Burnett's parody of her iconic character of Norma Desmond from "Sunset Boulevard" (1950); and Swanson's newfound flirtation with handsome co-star Lyle Waggoner.
In the first sketch, an installment of "Carol and Sis," Roger grows annoyed with elevator operator Jim's obvious crush on Carol and decides to set him straight during a dinner party. He corners Jim for a "man-to-man" chat and urges him to pursue someone else, like Chrissy; Carol begins to change her mind about the nerdy young man when he passionately declares that he merely wished to be honest about his sincere love for her.
Next, Swanson performs "A Newfangled Tango"; "The Old Folks" Molly and Bert chat about his great desire to return to the golf course to play a few holes. Following is a skit in which a guilt-ridden husband returns home to his ditzy wife Ruthie and, despite her apparent obliviousness, breaks down and confesses to a recent extramarital affair. She quickly forgives him — but then gets her revenge via poison.
Finally, the charwoman wanders into a film storage facility and sits down to watch a reel of "Silents is Golden," featuring Charlie Chaplin's Tramp character (played by Swanson). The charwoman then finds herself inside the story, being romanced by the Tramp alongside a much fancier couple; she soon returns to the present, wondering if the fantastical experience could have been real. Burnett then closes the show by singing her signature good-night song and adding Swanson's autograph to her guest book. Commercials deleted.
