LAVERNE & SHIRLEY: FROM SUDS TO STARDOM (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy series about two young working women, following their humorous adventures from the 1950s through the 1960s.
In this episode, Laverne and Shirley listen as Carmine sings “Because of You” at the Pizza Bowl. Afterward, they speak with Carmine, wanting him to help them with their upcoming performance in the Shotz brewery talent show. Later, Laverne and Shirley demonstrate their potential act to Carmine, who is less than impressed with their rendition of “I Believe. Carmine tries to inspire them to sing better. At the tryouts for the talent show, Lenny and Squiggy show off their act by singing “Starcrossed,” though they don’t land a spot on the docket. Then, Laverne and Shirley perform their cabana act, singing “Jamaica Farewell.” However they, too, are quickly dismissed by Gloria Lubitz, who is Laverne’s arch rival at the brewery.
Later, Laverne and Shirley are furious at being made to look like fools. Shirley wants to do something about it and make Gloria “rue the day she was ever born.” Shirley charges back to the hall and demands that Gloria put her and Laverne in the show. Gloria decides to make Laverne and Shirley part of the finale, though planning to ruin their song by turning it into a joke act. At the talent show, after a man sings “Toot, Toot, Tootsie, Goodbye” while making suction noises on his eyes, Laverne and Shirley begin their act. Gloria humiliates them by having male dancers in drag cavort behind them. Shirley is bummed out but Laverne actually enjoyed making people laugh. Laverne thinks they should plan to do something even sillier the next year. Finally, Carmine performs “Rags to Riches” at the Pizza Bowl, with Laverne, Shirley, Lenny, and Squiggy as backups.
