Summary
A special tenth-anniversary installment in this series of interview programs hosted by Larry King. This episode contains a series of clips of memorable interviews conducted with prominent politicians, celebrities and others from 1985-1995. King comments on the "winning formula" of the show's interview style, and clips shown include interviews with President Ronald Reagan (January 1990), General Norman Schwarzkopf (September 1992), hate crime victim Reginald Denny (January 1993), Attorney General Janet Reno (April 1993), Los Angeles district attorney Gil Garcetti (June 1994) and defense attorney F. Lee Bailey (March 1995), both of whom comment on the O.J. Simpson murder case, Governor Frank Keating, commenting on the Oklahoma City bombing (April 1995), and Army pilot and prisoner-of-war Michael Durant (November 1994). King explains that politicians are often high on his "gotta-get-'em list," largely because of a February 1992 interview with Ross Perot in which he publicly declared his intentions to run for President. Bush on October 5, followed by Bill Clinton and Al Gore the next day, and then hosted a memorable event on the 7th at which Bush took phone calls from voters. He then sat down with new President Clinton six months later (July 1993), and later spoke with First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton about Deputy White House Counsel Vince Foster's suicide (May 1994).
On November 9, 1993, King hosted a heated Gore/Perot debate, which drew the show's highest-ever ratings. Many other presidential hopefuls began declaring their candidacy on King's show, in what Dan Quayle referred to as the "Perot phenomenon" (July 1992), including Robert Dole, Phil Gramm, Richard Lugar, and Patrick Buchanan. King then turns his attention to Hollywood celebrities, showing clips from interviews with Barbra Streisand (February 1992), Frank Sinatra (May 1988), and Michael Douglas (February 1993), all of whom confess to having ongoing stage fright. Controversial guests include O.J. Simpson (December 1985), Mark David Chapman (December 1992), Jack Kevorkian (January 1994), and Earvin "Magic" Johnson (November 1992). More lighthearted topics include Whoopi Goldberg and her engagement (April 1994), Hillary Clinton and her many hairstyles (March 1994), and Kermit the Frog and Gonzo's hard-hitting questions with Ted Koppel (April 1994). King shares a "favorite moment" with Margaret Thatcher, then discusses other "international movers and shakers," including Mikhail Gorbachev (November 1993), Yasser Arafat (September 1993), and Frederik Willem de Klerk (September 1993).
King explains that he also travels to meet guests in various locations, showing clips of meetings with Mike Tyson in an Indiana prison (May 1994), Michael Jordan at his restaurant in Chicago (November 1993), and Oprah Winfrey in her Chicago studio (January 1995). Guests also sometimes receive phone calls from equally noteworthy individuals, as seen when Perot receives a call from Cher (July 1992), Jay Leno hears from Dole (September 1992), Gore fails to recognize wife Tipper's voice (September 1992) and Bill Clinton hears from his mother (October 1992). Other funny moments include chats with Dolly Parton (November 1994), Rosie O'Donnell (July 1993), Richard Lewis (March 1992), Faith Ford (January 1992), Don Rickles (January 1992), Jerry Lewis (June 1986), Mel Brooks (July 1993), Jack Hanna and his animal friends (August 1993), and Penn and Teller (June 1989). Other noteworthy actors shown include Marlon Brando (October 1994), Mel Gibson (December 1990), Burt Reynolds (May 1994), Jack Lemmon (January 1988), Bruce Willis (May 1991), Roseanne Arnold (March 1994), and Arnold Schwarzenegger (June 1993), all of whom discuss big roles that they turned down. The interviews continue with Ann-Margret (October 1991), Demi Moore (December 1994), Sylvester Stallone (August 1989), Barbara Bush (September 1994), Jimmy Carter (January 1993), Benazir Bhutto (April 1995), Bob Hope (July 1985), George Burns (November 1989), and Dustin Hoffman (March 1995).
King then closes the program by honoring the guests who have died since their chats, including Richard Nixon (January 1992), Arthur Ashe (June 1992), Sammy Davis Jr. (June 1989), Bette Davis (February 1988), John Candy (October 1993), Michael Landon (January 1988), Telly Savalas (February 1987), Vincent Price (June 1986) and Audrey Hepburn (June 1991). Commercials deleted.
