BOB NEWHART SHOW, THE: BUM VOYAGE (TV)

Summary

One in this series of comedy programs about the personal and professional life of a Chicago psychologist.

In this episode, Bob hosts a group therapy session and tries to guide a discussion of his patients' summer plans, though he is most successful when he suggests a long moment of thoughtful silence. Back at home, Emily is annoyed when Bob admits to having second thoughts about their long-planned vacation, a 63-day cruise through Europe. Later, she visits Bob at the office and sits in on another group session. During the moment of silence, the patients quickly sense Emily's frustration, prompting her to tell the others about the vacation debate. The group members quickly agree that they can continue to hold their sessions and talk amongst themselves in Bob's absence, leaving him no choice but to accept the plan.

Bob and Emily's friends offer a wide array of advice and "help" as the two prepare to depart. Jerry and Carol accompany them all the way to the ship to say goodbye — as do all of Bob's other patients, plus a random stranger. They eagerly crowd into a tiny stateroom to drink a toast and say their farewells. Finally, everyone rushes off with the "all ashore who's going ashore" warning. Emily and Bob are left alone for 63 full days of questionable travel bliss. Commercials deleted.
