BOB NEWHART SHOW, THE: A LOVE STORY (TV)

Summary

One in this series of comedy programs about the personal and professional life of a Chicago psychologist. In this episode, Bob’s mother Martha comes to visit him at his office, telling him that his sister Ellen has just gotten engaged to her longtime boyfriend John Tobin. Bob is already aware of the engagement, and has been picked by John to be his best man. Emily hosts a bridal shower for Ellen at the apartment, and Bob’s plan to leave for a baseball game is ruined with the arrival of a heavy rainstorm. Ellen and Martha arrive and they talk about John’s less-than-romantic proposal just before the other guests arrive. The shower lets out and Howard comes over to visit. Bob introduces him to Ellen and he finds himself instantly attracted to her, although Bob tries to dissuade him by pointing out his hastiness and telling him that Ellen is getting married in a matter of days. Howard is undeterred and does his best to endear himself to Ellen. She awakens the next morning, clearly bedraggled, and talks to Emily, who has her doubts about Ellen and John’s viability as a couple. Ellen asserts that she loves John and that they are “comfortable” together. After Bob and Emily leave for work, Howard comes around to visit Ellen. He gives her compliments and they have breakfast together, and he offers to spend the day helping pick out her wedding dress, despite her insistence that she has a wedding rehearsal and that John is coming in the next day.

The next day, Howard comes into Bob’s office in a panic, telling him that he is trying to devise a way to prevent Ellen from marrying John. Bob tries to settle Howard, believing that he is only experiencing a physical attraction to Ellen and trying to talk him out of his plans to somehow dispose of John. Howard realizes that he has no chance and sinks into depression. Emily visits him and offers him some company, trying to convince him to get over Ellen. He cannot and asks her to leave. Soon thereafter, Ellen comes to visit him, much to his surprise, and tells him that she called off her wedding to John in order to be with him. Howard is elated and they kiss. Martha tells everyone that she and Herb are to renew their vows to prevent the church booking and the arrival of the guests from going to waste. Commercials deleted.
